Default Diagnosis on my oil leak

When you last heard from me, we'd just discovered that our XK8 had emptied it's oil reservoir on a quick trip to town.

Well, finally got Reggie into our mechanic. The problem is pretty much a best-possible result in terms of time and expense: it's just a bad gasket on the lower oil pan. Replacement: about $300. And of course, a complete oil service.

HURRAY!

The oil pan gasket (1999 Jaguar XK8 Parts - Lower Oil Pan Gasket - NCA1730AD) can be had for less than $US50.

Are you telling us that your mechanic is charging $US250 for installing it? Whoa! Seems a bit much to me.

Are you sure it's just a bad gasket? A bad gasket would cause a leak which would cause your cat to leave its mark wherever you parked it. Losing all of your oil on a short trip to town has to be something else. I would be looking at the oil cooler and its hoses.

Please keep us informed.

Cheers,

Stu

A '98 XK8 does not have a oil cooler. That makes it more of a mystery. Could the oil pressure sender have disintegrated?
