Can someone tell me how the dip stick tube is mounted to the engine and where is that. In removing the left cam cover I had to pull the tube up some to get the bracket off the bolt. The bolt had been cut off just above the nut already. But this time when I reinstalled the cam cover and tried to re connect the dip stick bracket it will not attach. Looks like I must nave pulled the tube out of the mount on the block. And I cannot find where that is by looking under the car.

Need a little help please.

 

If you follow the tube down to the side of the sump, you will find the place it fits into.

Before you reinstall the tube, take a look at the condition of the sealing ring and clean any dirt and debris from around the mounting hole.

 

I must assume you pulled the dipstick out as well. Had you left the dipstick in it would guide you back into the hole. Putting it back in that hole is not an easy task the opening for it is on the sump and hidden behind the A/C compressor. I searched my photos and could not find one that would help. You do want to use caution not to push dirt into the hole it will all mix with the oil.

You may want to get a micro camera

 

Before you put the tube back in, I would recommend cutting a slot in the ring that holds the tube to the cam cover stud, so it's more like a spade connection than a ring connection. This is what some people do to release the tube while avoiding the tendency of the tube to pull out at the bottom. I can attest it's kind of difficult to do with the tube in, and as you can imagine it's much easier to cut that slot with the tube out, and you'll be glad of it next time you have to remove the cam cover.

Thanks guys. I have tried to follow the tube down and have not been successful. Is it mounted to the removable sump on the side or top. Is it behind the AC? Hidden by the AC? I know it sounds stupid, but I see where it goes from the top. But when I crawl under the car I just CANNOT pick it up as to where it goes or is connected.

Good idea to cut a slot in the bracket. Will do that.

 

The mounting hole is hidden by the air conditioning compressor.

I just replaced secondary tensioners on a 2000 XKR today and used a slide hammer to dislodge the dipstick tube (like I ALWAYS do) but I left the dipstick in the tube/hole.

I have been doing the job this way for 20 years since the 4.0 V8 was introduced because the hole is hidden behind the compressor/bracket as NBCat stated.

The dipstick is considerably LONGER than the tube and it stays in the block so as to guide the tube/seal back into the hole if you just displace it enough to remove the cam cover bolt.

Could a borescope (USB camera, quite cheap) get down there to see?

 

Got it in place. At least the same as it has been since the time I replaced the secondary tensioners several years ago. Might not be totally in but there is where it has been operating without trouble. May have caused some minor seepage.
