Default E-01 on the CD screen

Upon trying to play CDs in my new-to-me 2004 XK8 I received an E01 indication in the information screen on the Alpine head unit.

Am I to understand that this is the dreaded "no CD" error message that indicates that the CD changer is malfunctioning?

Yep.
Remove the CD cartridge, re-insert and it will probably play for a time before it does it again.

If the cartridge won’t eject then try rapping on the box with something like a rubber covered screwdriver handle.

It’s not uncommon for the cartridge to get hung up.

The cartridge ejects properly. The player still will not load.
