Default Electrical questions

Just bought a '97 XK8 Coupe. The indicator lights for the front and rear fog lamps don't come on, but the fog lamps are working - fuse or something worse? The CD changer in the trunk isn't working. The radio, antenna, and cassette player all work fine. Any suggestions?

I dont think there is one magic solution ..after 40 years fault finding I can only suggest you pick on one circuit and fault find that . You often find that putting that right sorts other problems. diagrams are at jagrepair.com.
If its the indicator lamps not comming on it may just be the bulbs need changing. Most people go for LEDs

As pointed out, if the fog lights are functioning, it’s not a fuse issue.

If just the indicator lights, you have to ask yourself, “how important is this to me to fix ?”

everyone going to have a different answer to that .

The fuse for the indicator lights in the switches is a separate fuse to the fog lights themselves. On my car it turned out the security sounder was blowing the fuse.

Check fuse 6 (5A) in the driver side fuse box. That gives power to all indicator lights in switches (among other things)

As far as I know, there’s no fuse for just the 2 fog light indicators. Is the OP missing other indicator lights besides the fog lamp ones ?

I suppose it depends on what options he's got. On my car the heated seat indicator lights didn't work either, along with the traction control light - all on the same fuse along with the security sounder - at least that is the case on my 2001.

The fog light indicator bulbs are switched directly by two pins on the BPM, one of which also grounds the front fog light relay from the same pin. The rear fog light relay is controlled by the Security and Locking Module. The fog lights themselves have a fuse each for front and rear - its a lot of trouble to go to to save on wiring...

Yes, all of the strips indicator lights out at once is a different story.

On my 2002 XKR I have all the coupe options. The panel has all indicator lamps working except one of the fog lamp indicators ( all of the actual accessories including the fog lamps working fine).

I have heated seats. Other indicator lights do light. Fuse #6 is fine. Perhaps this has been an ongoing concern as when I checked that fuse it was installed upside down, so someone has already been tinkering with it. Where is the "Security Sounder" fuse?

As ZRay said, how important is it to fix? Getting behind those switches takes a console disassembly.

Thank you all and Happy New Year!

Any suggestions on the CD changer? The cassette player works and when I hit the button to switch to the CD changer, nothing happens at all; the CD continues to play and I don't hear any sounds emanating from the changer as if it wants to work, so it seems to be dead. There is also no error code showing up on the radio screen/message center.

Thanks in advance.

Both of your suggested fuses are fine. Perhaps it's just the light itself inside the switch. Thank you for your advice.

Just guessing rather testing the fuses first would lead to dismantling the centre console, replacing the bulbs, putting it all back together again and it still not working if it was just the fuse (like it was in my case). Checking power, ground, fuses and relays first is always the best way to diagnose electrical faults before you take anything apart.

The No 2 post says may just be the bulbs
The word may does not exclude other tests but poses a suggestion.
I think the front of the switch just prises off to access the bulb .It certainly does for the hazard button.

Lol. A bulb not working always may be a blown bulb, so well done for spotting that.

How do I remove the cover to access the bulb? Does it really just pry off or must I disassemble the console?

on my 2002 XKR the center console cover had to come off to reveal the bolts holding on the fog lamp panel.

Take care with the removal of the shifter trim ring. It is fragile and easily broken. It took me some time to get the courage to attempt the procedure. Do a search on the forum of “shifter trim ring removal” and you will get the advice on how to get it off with a chance of not breaking it.

I know on mine that the hazard switch can be prised off ..sit sticks so I sanded the edges so I suspect the others are the same

I just checked the wiring diagram ( Why did you not do that ?) and while the hazard is a filament bulb the two others are LEDs .Unlikely to have failed. So I would check the colours of the feed wires etc and see if you can mend it.
Diagram is at jagrepair.com

I didn't check the wiring diagram because I'm not an electrician. Help, not criticism was requested.
