Default Engine Failsafe Mode

On two consecutive days the “Engine Failsafe Mode” warning came up on my 1996 XK8. On the first occasion, I went for a two mile drive; parked; stopped the engine; re-started it and the warning was extinguished. The car ran correctly. On the second occasion, I left the engine running for a few seconds before switching off and re-starting. Again, the warning message was extinguised and the car ran correctly.
Any suggestions?

the inexpensive readers would not connect to my '02 XKR. This one works well enough to read most fault codes:

Also, check the condition and fitment of your intake snorkel. I had an ill fitting one that would allow a little air in at certain times...

Did you lose cruise Control too? If so look for loose hose vacuum leak near throttle.

Mine (1997) had similar issues sinse 2011. Sometimes not able to start (crank ok) on P - on N staring fine. Issues and fix new (used) Gearbox rotary switchs aka Jaguar slang Range Sensor. (Functionality can be verified by measuring contact by document attached)
