Default Engine Growling

My indy tried to find the source of a growling or whirling sound that changes directly with the rpm. He removed the serp belt and the sound remained. This probably means it's coming from INSIDE the engine. He put his fingers on the oil lines and felt a vibration so he is guessing it might be the oil pump. What would be your guess?

2003 XK8 with 92k miles.

How are your engine mounts? Metal to metal contact from failed engine mounts greatly magnify what are otherwise normal engine noises.

I'll have them checked.

FWIW when the silencer shakes loose from the air cleaner box you get an obvious growling noise.

Super long shot, but the motor mount comment reminded me of this.

++++ on the mounts.

I changed mine the other day and am still getting used to the "new" sound... I don't know if you do your own work but following the advise found here, it's easy... Granted, ya gotta shave down a 15mm/9/16ths socket to git it on the LH mount top bolt, rest is smooth work.

The air snorkel and box are tight.

I guess it's possible the engine mounts could be bad but seems a long shot at only 92,000 miles. ?

The "growling" is most noticeable from 1500 rpm to 2500 rpm and is hard to hear from 3000 and up ... maybe because the regular engine noise is is overpowering the growling. I hope it's nothing inside the engine! In the last few thousand miles it is not getting worse, thank goodness. It kinda sounds like I have a supercharger.

Thanks for the suggestions.
