Default Engine Question

Hello everyone,
I just joined the group the other day. I do not yet own a Jaguar but I am in the hunt for either an XK8 or XKR. I have already been told to look at cooling system and tensioners as they can be a problem. During a recent look at ebay someone was selling either a 2000 or 2001 and the seller made mention that this particular car (either did or did not) have a particular engine (Naislik???? sound familiar) as if this was or wasnt a good thing to have. Can anyone fill me in. I know it wasnt the 4.2 engine found in later years.

He was most likely referring to Nikasil cylinder liners. You will find a lot of information with the search engine.

Cheers

Thanks I did find some info. If I were to buy a car from out of state - ebay suggests independent auto inspections which I fully intend to use ....or I am wondering if there is a network here that can ID jaguar inspectors in varios states

You'd be best posting in the relevant Regional section for member comments on reliable folk.

I was asking in general if I am better off asking the seller to bring it to his neaby Jag dealer and get an inspection done there? It appears ebay's independents dont even put the car on a lift.

Default Nikasil

The 4.0 came with Nikasil lined cylinders. Oft times the Nikasil wore down allowing blow-by. This allowed fuel to wash down the cylinders in turn causing difficult starting (due to loss of compression).

I would never buy a used car sight unseen irrespective of who does the inspection. Spend the money and go see the car in person.

Take your time and look for one you can see and touch. Even when you have it inspected and you look yourself you still may be surprised. Buying out of state guarantees surprises and not the good kind.

Coldpad, alot of opinion has been expressed on this forum as to what year to buy, and the concensus has been the newest you can find. If you are a car hobbiest and enjoy maintaining and updating older cars, then the older cars can be a joy. But you need to buy from another kinderd soul who has been on top of the maintenance. I bought mine from a lot in East Greenwich, that had previously been sold and serviced by Jake Kaplin's, and at 60,000 mi. needed all the front end rubber replaced, as well as new tensioners and water pump/ thermostat. The 4.2's have alot fewer engine and transmission issues. Body issues issues are about the same. Supercharged cars have fuel pump problems. On and on........get a good price, good inspection (be there) and have fun. I am!
