Default Engine Rebuild 99 XK8

Well After so many months of using Barks head gasket repair , i have no choice but to replace the head gasket and or rebuild the engine. The Engine has 160,000 and it purrs. She is a beaut. I had the tensioners replaced about 90,000 miles aswell as the Cams. So this engines runs good.

But now i have this craazy problem with internal exhaust leak into the cooling system. I have done the coolant gas test, and it comes positve for exhaust fume leaking into the coolant system,. The pressure the leak creates in the cooling system, blows the seal to the waterpump, thus burning out the bearing in the water pump. within the last 5 months , i have replaced the waterpump 4 times. Yikes!!! so im going to take the plunge and try to rebuild the engine myself. But in looking at all of the posts relating to engine building, i have not found any diagrams or proper instructions in doing so. Also, I dont know what proper tools i need in order to do the job properly. Can someone advice me of proper tools that i do require to take on this tasks. ALso where can i get detail diagrams or even rebuilding instruction? I would greatly appreciate any help i can get.

This vehicle really hates to sit. she like to be driven.

My suggestion is that you find a good indie with a good price as it sounds to me like this work could be beyond your experience. A head gasket replacement on four cam engines is quite an undertaking for a person used to doing light maintenance. You will need to be familiar with machine shop procedures and have a good working knowledge of what to look for. For example, a headgasket leak that has gone on for awhile like this can erode the metal surfaces, requiring rewelding to fill the damage, meaning engine out. You need to know what is passable and what has to be fixed. Just saying, unless you have NO choice, get help on site.

$300 plus shipping and you are good to go. It's a bit of a gamble, BUT you could save a ton of money. Worse case scenario, you can sell the peripherals and recoup the cost.

I should add, when you have exhaust going into coolant, not only can there be erosion, there can be warping and/or cracks. You need some experience to know what to look for and how to fix it. I would also have the heads machined and pressure tested by a machine shop. With all those miles, a valve job is a good idea as well.

Assuming you are just doing the top end:

Price out EVERYTHING before deciding on rebuilt v used motor. You can do it, but the head rebuilding is gonna run you around $400-$500 and the gasket set $400 so you are at $900 for just the top end if you don't replace anything else. (Timing chains, lower tensioners/rails, motor mounts... )

if you download the jaguar AJ repair course it gives you about all you need to know, and we are here to lend advice if you get stuck. I have done a few, and they are not too difficult if you label wires and FOLLOW the guide. Nothing quite as satisfying as hearing the engine roar after rebuilding it yourself.

Consider pulling the motor and trans and doing the build on a stand- it will save your back additionally you could change out the A-drum proactively if you desire.. Also a great opportunity to replace the octopus hose and secondary coolant pump.

Thanks for all of the responds. Iam not doing the work all by myself. A friend with 15 years of auto repair will be helping me on this task. So im not alone. But i do want to do it right. My friends garage is set up to take engine out and rebuild the engine.

I called the individual with the engine, i am trying to figure out how to get this engine here, but that said, i would still like to rebuild my engine.

Dsnyder can you send me a link for the jaguar AJ Repair course? Again thank you all for any help i can get.
