Thanks for the reply, and thanks for taking the time to read the symptoms I was describing, I don't think everyone has!

At no point do you state which gearbox is in the car or which engine.

Well, how would you fill a 5 speed if there's no fill plug?

For the avoidance of doubt, here's a snip I borrowed from the CTSC:

It's strategically located near the exhaust so as to keep your hands warm during the fill process

The 5 speed, 6 speed and 8 speed ZF gearboxes all have fill / level plugs as I know from draining and filling all of them.

Are you referring to the Mercedes gearbox rather than the ZF gearbox? All the XK8 models of any year and engine size use a ZF box.

Yes mate mercedes. Dont know about xk8 and poster didnt provide any details. If he hasnt bothered doing any preventative maintence at 135k then shouldnt be surprised if its gone bang. An expensive missed fluid change by the sounds of it.

No, it's a ZF 5HP24 transmission, brinny, which is what the dialogue is about & the OP has in his 2002 XK8...

Hello,
To my knowledge, the switch to the 4.2L and 6G transmission was in 2020. Therefore, it could be a 4L or 4.2L engine, meaning it could also be a 5G or 6G automatic. The information about the initial registration in 2002 is too vague. In the case of the XK8, it is definitely a ZF transmission, as, to my knowledge, the Mercedes transmission was only installed in the XKR in conjunction with the 5G automatic transmission.

Best regards, Willi

You don't have any XK8 or XKR listed in your sig, so we didn't know what car you have.

Update -

Gearbox had input shaft broken. Fluid levels were fine, and the fluid was actually in pretty good shape.

Low milage used box fitted by a local guy.

Car ran like absolute **** when I picked it up!

Voltage up to 17V on the dash gauge at over 2k rpm , instrument lights going off. Misfiring horribly. Warning codes for gearbox, instrument cluster, O2 sensor, ABS, probably more!

Many codes voltage related, so first ting, replaced the alternator.

Voltage now 13V, most codes clear. O2 sensor code, bad idling and awful misfire when up to temp still remaining.

O2 sensor replaced, now idling nicely. No coces.

Took it out for a short drive. Initially fine, but degenerating badly when up to temp. No codes though, and gearbox at least felt good.

Popped coil off under the reservoir, and sure enough, full of coolant. All 4 cylinders as it turned out.

cleared water from the wells and put it all back together, and now running nice. Idles good, revs well at running temperature.

So looking good. Still haven't driven it in anger.

A bit pissed off that it seems the mechanic seems to have flooded the spark plug wells somehow (probably removed the reservoir for access), and strange the alternator failed exactly as he was working on it, but happy the car is recovered!

Thanks for all the help leading up to this. I was certainly on the brink of sending it to the crusher!

Thanks for the update and glad you finally got there

It's the first time I've read of a broken input shaft, although the alternator failure is more common. I had exactly the same symptoms.

Same, although with hindsight the symptoms were there (TC spinning, zero input speed on the gearbox through OBD) and somebody above did mention it as a possibilty

17V on the dash VM was the big clue, all the other symptoms make sense from there. I am really glad I noticed the voltage being high, because I would never have sorted through the list without such a huge pointer!
