Default Engine stall at red light, restricted performance , engine fault

Hi Everyone, I took my baby out of storage after 2 years ,have 96000 miles on my xk8 1997.
It needed new alternator in may , since I got it back from shop having intermittent engine fault issues.
  • Engine fault/ restricted performance msg at idle occasionally. Today starts up fine, runs smooth then suddenly at stop sign engine stall. Restricted perf/ engine fault message. Restarted at stop sign, give it gas in P, run rough about 2 min drive, then flipped to normal smooth driving , +error messages went away.( During rough run I heard some weird noises , clanking and burnt oil smell for a sec (?) )🤔
  • Issue happens more rapidly when turn AC on, almost right away.
  • Without AC it drove fine until now.
Actions taken so far:
  1. Replaced timin chain to metal at 32k, fixed throttle body recall issue
  2. A week ago just got 1 ignition module replaced (seemed to help, before it stalled right after ignition)
  3. Cleared MAF sensor and throttle body.
Any idea what I what check next? Can the ECU cause intermittent issues like this?

Thanks so much for all info!

Those codes are typical for a '97 ECU capacitor failure. If you search the site for 1997 ECU failure you will find several threads that are relevant and suggestions on repair.

I had a problem with my 2006 Jag. Super V8... Every time I went up this hilly road, the restrictive performance light came on, and went off when road was normal. Than two weeks latter, car stalls, I restarted it up and engine was jumping all over the place. I changed out one bad ignition coil, and everything was good again. The car took that hilly road with no problems this time.

Not sure you have a ignition coil bad, but heard they go south fast on the XK8... Mine has 45k on it and so far so good!

Thanks for your quick reply, I will probably send the ECU to a rebuild company and see what happens when I install it ...Fingers crossed 😄🤞

I had all the same codes and more on my 97 xk8 coupe when I got it. I fixed the ecu myself and no codes anymore. If you can solder on a circuit board you can do it yourself, it’s not as intimidating as it seems. I sourced all the capacitors needed through eBay and Amazon for about 35 bucks all said and done and it didn’t take too long, but I did take my time while doing it. Check out xk8 bible on a google search and it explains everything you need to know.
