Default Restricted Performance

My 2000 XK8 began displaying Restricted Performance and the dreaded amber engine lights two weeks ago. I initially read that my MAF sensor and Throttle Body may have been the culpit(s), so I cleaned them following the advice and directions found on this forum. No change in the lighs, so I had a scan performed and 7 codes appeared, the first of which P0306 indicated my number 6 cylinder was misfiring. OK, I replaced the plugs and examined the coils and rubber tubes. Everything looked good, put it back together and same codes. I replaced the ignition coil for the # 6 cylinder, which I understand is located at Bank 1, Position 3. Everything ran great and the lights went away - FOR ONE DAY - and now I have the same problem. Had the car scanned again and the first code to appear is P0306. Can anyone shed any light on this dilemma? There is nothing sadder than limping around in an underperforming XK8! Thanks in advance.

check the connector on the coil also, there's been some talk of the pins.

You didn't mention if the plug well had any oil or water in it. Was it dry when you went diggin?

I did notice oil on several of the plugs - not on the threads or electrode, but on the ceramic. I assume that I need to replace the valve cover gaskets.

I read that the ECU might need to be reset and that driving the car about 30 miles should do it. I took the car for an early morning ride, initially no restricted performance indicator, however the amber engine light was lit. Car ran fine for 25 miles and then the restricted performance indicator lit and the engine became rough. I'm going to give it a good wax job (and maybe the problem will go away!) and get an OBD scan when the auto parts store opens in two hours.

#6 cylinder on your car is 2nd one back on the left bank (2) or B bank

front
5 1
6 2
7 3
8 4

trans

You are probably replacing the wrong coil

Here is the Global Tech Reference

Thanks, I relied on an ALLDATA printout provided to me by a mechanic that indicates the following firing order (1) 1, (2) 1, (1) 4, (1) 2, (2) 2, (1) 3, (2) 3 and (2) 4, where the left bank is (1) and the right bank is (2). I am going to switch the coils now and let you know. Thanks all for the help.

I have tried to upload the later Global Vehicle specs and it will not appear as an attachment (VSB2007_2004.pdf). It is 3MB and the limit is 5.25MB but still no attach.

BTW JPM, there's alot of good technical documents linked in the FAQ thread at the top of these forums, including that specification PDF Bob just provided. May want to see what else is up there.

Bob, If you have a newer version, email it to me and I'll get it hosted on a separate server for access.

Bob and everyone that has contributed, thanks! I removed the coil from the wrong #6 cylinder and moved it to the CORRECT # 6 cylinder per Bob's direction. I disconnected the battery to reset the computer. The amber light continued to light. I drove the car and no restricted performance appeared. I took the car to the auto parts store, borrowed their scanner and reset the code. So far, no amber light and no restricted performance. Keeping my fingers crossed . . .

BTW, why the false information on the firing order from ALLDATA?

If you're a paying member to ALLDATA, or your 'hookup' is, I'd submit a database error request, it happens from time to time. There are a lot of systems and every make, model, and year...bound to get something wrong in the compilation of all that information.
