Engine turns over but will not start
I have a 2001 xk8 convertible that will not start. It has happened before and by playing with key or disconnecting battery terminal it will start. This usually comes on after battery goes dead. Replaced Battery, turns over fine and has 42 psi at fuel rail. The rollover switch is in down position, all fuses are good. all relays are working dash lights come on all gauges work. I found a link here at on time telling me how to turn the ignition key in the door I think 3 times and then put in ignition and start but I do not remember the sequence maybe evan putting into the trunk lock first then door then ignition replaced crank sensor no difference.
I've moved your question from General Tech Help to XK8/XKR forum. This is the place to post technical questions about your model.

So ,when it runs, it is running well? Just the hard to start problem that sometimes doesn't happen ?
I'm leaning towards either a flooded condition (strong fuel smell?) or bore wash.
Bore wash is well covered in the forum. For flooding ,just hold the pedal to the floor and crank it until it starts.

Thought about bore wash. Have sprayed starting fuel into pvc valve inlet almost started. But I believe it is because of combustion I do not think I am getting ignition to coils and when I did the sequence of events with key it started are you aware of this system. It is as if I am locked out of Ignition mode. key fob works everything the only thing not working properly is crank no start and my windows will not roll up when i close doors and i have reset program. When my alarm goes off I cannot turn off unless I undo battery This is why I think it is key related
Well
It’s not bore wash then.... Hmmm...
Have you done all the fuse and relays checks?
Any DTC codes?
Then onto your suspicion on the key. Do you have a second key? Does that start the car? Do you have a KTM chip in the key? Then it may be either a defective chip or a “dodgy” exciter on the key barrel.
Then onto checking wiring to all the modules involved in the start.A lot of info on the starting electrical sequence is in another ongoing thread here on this Forum. Link below.

IMHO Worst case scenario is the security module is bad.

If I read your post correctly you checked/replaced the ignition coil relay and crank sensor?
You have a few things that could cause this and it all relates to the immobilization system if I am reading your post correctly. At the key you have an exciter ring that reads the chip in your key if it is not reading it properly it could be your problem. You can check it by measuring the ohm value across the 2 wires and it should read 33.4. You also need to check the shifter selector switch for proper adjustment. The first test is to try cranking with the shifter in the “N” position. At times the shifter cable stretches and will not provide the proper protocol for a start or it needs to be replaced. See link for the shifter cable adjustment.

Now know the immobilization system can be a little overwhelming so I would first check the obvious first.

Correct me if I am wrong. The car turns over in park and neutral selector slot. Prior to this happening the car always started when battery was fully charged or if i jumped the battery it would start. This condition comes on when I let battery go to low and I open trunk with key replace battery or charge it and it will not start. At times I have disconnected battery touched pos and neg together car has started. I have just disconnected one cable re installed car started. I found a site on this forum and it said how to reset the key not the fob it works fine. Something along the lines of putting key in door lock turning so many times then insert into ignition slot and start car. I did that one time and it worked. I just cannot find the link that told me how to use it
Installing the key in the door then the ignition will not reprogram the key to the key transponder module (KTM) the only way I have reprogrammed a key to the car was with IDS Jaguar software. Just as a side note the door does not read the chip on the key but the ignition switch exciter ring does.
The security system exciter ring, key transponder module, security module and the transmission control module, body control module and the engine control module control the starting of the car. You have several other things that are in the mix to get the immobilizer system to allow the car to start so it is hard to say what is going on until you verify what is or is not working.
My first guess is to check the exciter ring and the shifter selector switch to see if it is adjusted properly.
But know this car is very sensitive to low battery voltage and does not do well on a low battery voltage.

Does anybody know of the link that is in the forum that describes the process of putting the key in the door turning it 3 times back and fourth then inserting into ignition and the car then starts. I know everybody has an Idea about what to do. I'm just saying I found this process on one of the forums and did it and guess what the car started. I just cannot remember if it went into the trunk lock first then the door or it may not have evan had to go to the trunk lock first Im 67 and my memory just not what it used to be along with some other stuff. I know about low battery no fuel pressure and everything else been mentioned. Just know this when I did the process I am looking for it started. Just cannot find thread. I was searching under MObilizer and thats how I found it but it seems that I cannot find it again. It may have been a forum that sent me to a different web site. I wish I had printed it but I just wrote it down went outside and car started Thanks
