engine vibration
Hello everyone,
I wanted to get some opinions for my 98 XK8 convertible. I recently reacquired my XK8 a few days ago from a friend that i sold it to about 3 years ago. When I sold it to him the XK8 had about 49,000 miles and everything was working well and running smooth. Well when I bought it back from him, a lot of little things were wrong but the item that stood out the most was the engine. The 4.0 L V8 has a slight hesitation off idle, is not that responsive and when it does come to idle the whole motor is shaking, not violently, but shaking enough that the vibration can be felt throughout the rest of the car and chassis. In other words it is not silky smooth. I poured through the paperwork that he gave me. He had the 60,000 mile checkup done and a few oil/filter changes, belts, etc. But I don't think the plugs were changed.
Can this be cured with a major tune up? Or am I seeing the indication of the tensioners acting up again?
thanks,
VernonZ

RE: engine vibration
Not much to go on. I would disconnect the battery for 20 minutes then start and hook up a obdii, see what codes if any come up.
Too many variables to give any suggestions for mild eng vibration.
But just stabbing in the dark, I'd say a fouled plug or bad ign coil at one of the cylinders.

My first guess would be years of using cheap gas and the fuel system is just bogged down. If you're into spending money, let the dealer give it a good 'flushing' per se, and clean the injectors, throttle body, etc. Plugs may be fouled also, but hard to tell w/o physical examination. Air intake as mentioned by Joe above could also be a variable.
You sure you wanted it back in this condition?

H20boy, I think you are spot on about the injectors. If it were mine I would run a can of that cleaner through it that you guys think highly of, with a tank of gas. What is the name of it? Also there are some good instructions on here on how to clean a throttle body. Do a search and you will find them. The main thing to remember is to use a mild cleaner that is made for this job, so you don't damage the thin coating on the inside. You didn't say how many miles it has. If you think it might be plugs pull one, this will give you a good idea if they need changed.

RE: engine vibration
I had an intermittant misfire that a can of BG-44K cleared up. It is best to use this cleaner on a trip and not let it sit in the tank for a long period of time. It needs a good hot continuous flow through the injectors to clean them properly. Also cleans spark plug deposits. A weak coil could also cause the car to shake, but this usually sets off an OBD2 code.
