Default English English vs. American English

Had the bonnet open and when closed message "Hood Not Latched." Opened bonnet and both Bonnet Open and Hood Not Latched. Closed and just Hood Not Latched. Didn't make sense why two messages on same thing and why not Bonnet Not Latched. Searched forum and learned the hood is the convertible top. I guess like from the hood on a cloak.

We used to play a gag on 'new-guys' at the dealer.
When the new guy was about done with a car and walked away or went to the parts dept, I would sneek up to the customer car and change the INSTPK language to Japanese so the display showed 'squigly' writing.
Then I would 'pop-the-boot-lid' and just set it down but not closed.

The display would indicate 'boot-open' in Japanese but the new guy would just see 'squigly' writing.

He would look concerned while backing out of the shop and call someone over to see the display.

We would all ask what he did to the car?

He would deny doing anything but we told him he must have screwed something up!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We would finally laugh and show him how to change languages in the display!!!!!!!!!!!!

@motorcarman Your story reminds me of one my dad told me. Back in the '70s when everyone was driving Oldsmobiles and Buicks that got 12 mpg, a guy he worked with was the first one to buy some Japanese or Euro econo box. Guy was always bragging about his mileage. So for a while they started adding gas to his tank without his knowledge increasing the amount every week and his bragging increased. After awhile they started syphoning gas out a little at first and then more. I don't remember if he figured it out or if they fessed up.

Indeed, in many respects, she was quite English, and was an excellent example of the fact that we have really everything in common with America nowadays, except, of course, language.

I actually did that to a RA in our mens' dorm back in the late 60's. He was such an AH, I never told anyone...just giggled a lot.

Yes, admittedly a bit confusing for us on this side of the pond. To a Brit however, makes perfect sense. You would think Jaguar could include a UK-to-US dictionary with cars shipped to North America!

For many years I though the American 'fender' was the British 'bumper' - it was only after many years I realised it was the 'wing'. Makes much more sense to be the bumper.

I guess a FENDER is the part that "fends off an attack"?(like from other cars)

Found this interesting article on our differences:

I have my Siri set to British. Now I know why she says “you have entered the car park for your destination.”
