Default Evaporator Core...

My indie mechanic recharged the A/C earlier this summer and all was well. A few weeks later a bit of "smoke" thereafter came out of the vents and the A/C slowly went south.

He recharged it (it only took a lb) but said the evaporator core needed replacing because he could smell the gas. He said it was a big job and would not attempt without further info.

Any other solutions besides what seems to be a big job and if it is an evaporator core any advice?

Thanks in advance.

They don't go bad that often, I'd just replace it...if new parts price is too much, the salvage system Search Results have a bunch available between $100 - $200.

Actually it is less of a parts issue than a can my indie mechanic tackle this...he is a bit reticent without further guidance.

I would rather not go to a dealer...

Other than removing / refilling refrigerant, it looks more tedious than difficult.

The JTIS procedure is on my MediaFire account. You can download it with the following link:

Free Cloud Storage - MediaFire

This will give your Indie the chance to assess the removal and refit procedure.

Thank you G-"cubed"...that was the response I was hoping to get. I am not a big fan of "fill it, sell it and forget it"

I intend on making this car an heirloom...

Thanks to all who responded.

Gee, I wonder how so many companies make a living selling refrigerant detectors when a person can just smell a leak? Get a second opinion, normally evaporators are 'pattern failure' components - i.e. you don't read about many going bad on XK8s. That's not to say its impossible, just not common. Normally 'o'-rings, etc. are the common culprits here.

+1

The first thing a refrigeration specialist does when a system is low on refrigerant is to sniff the whole system looking for the source of the leak.

If a shop does not have a refrigerant detector, or does not know how to use it, they are not qualified to do the job.
