Default Front brake pads.......

Tried to change the front brake pads yesterday but could not get the two bolts ( 17mm )out which hold the caliper to the backing plate. Soaked in releasing fluid but still no joy. Will give it another go now.
Also a fail to start yesterday, I think I am going to need another battery or there is a problem with the alternator. The voltage on the gauge reads 13v so thought that would be enough?
Any thoughts on the above appreciated.

Cheers,
Arty

I could not get one of the bolts out of my XJ6, even after three months of penetrating oil application and impact wrench. I finally took a MAPP/OXY torch to it, using a piece of asbestos shingle to protect the caliper boot. Less than one min. of heating was required.

Yes was thinking along those lines myself RJ. Just got back from our local auto shop and a battery test, one cell gone! Not buying a new one this year as the 8 will be in storage for next year and the XJS will be getting a run out.
Thanks again for the reply.

Default Stuck bolt

Arty, Had a few of these over the years and took the breaker bar and set it on a jack after the car was on stands. Jack the bar up and let the weight of the car brake it loose. Works better with a floor Jack.
Keep yourself out of the way.

Arty,

You are trying to remove the Guide Pins (arrowed in blue) and not the Carrier to Vertical Link bolts (arrowed in red)?

Caliper Guide pins are a 2 x Weetabix job but the Carrier bolts take the whole box!

Oh Oh looks like a foo par on my behalf. Yes Graham I was trying to get the carrier bolts out.
I take it thats not the way to go but to remove the Caliper Guide pins? Not done this before on this car or this type of brake system. Is it just a case of taking the Guide pins out and the spring of the front and it all comes free? Just had my mind set on taking off the caliper and nothing else.....
Thanks for the heads up.
Just found this link, didnt look before as I thought it was so straight forward.....

Arty,

YES - Guide Pins out and the whole Caliper comes away from the Carrier. There's some useful diagrams in the JTIS section:

JTIS - XK8 Front Brake Pads.pdf

You only have to remove the Carrier if you need to change the Discs.

Thanks so much for the advice and info Graham. I'll give it a go over the weekend weather permitting, like everything else its easy when you know how ( and your spanners are decent, lol's ).

FYI, when I was taking out my carrier bolts it took about 800 foot pounds of torque to break them free, that was me and my wife on a 3 foot breaker bar.

I was gonna say, it shouldn't be that hard to remove the guide pins. I'd still maybe put some anti-seize on them when you re-install.
