Default Front windows won't go up

I knew this was a problem in waiting. The window moves down a bit to pass the convertible top and when the door is closed it goes back up. Well today, that stopped working. Pull on the knob and the window comes down a bit, pull again, a bit more, etc.

Did have the battery disconnected while doing the purge control valve.

So I am guessing that a sensor someplace is confused, how to I make that sensor happy again?

On the XJ40 all windows will go up with the key turned to the left but that doesn't seem to work on the XK8.

Any ideas?

Close the doors press and hold the drivers door window down button until you hear a click then all the way up untill you hear a click again. Repeat for the other side.

Roll the window all the way down then continue to hold the button for a couple of seconds until you hear a click, then roll it up and hold until it clicks again, and you should be good, you will probably need to do the other side also.

rwho, in their rush to advise you on HOW to correct the problem, they neglected to explain the WHY.

Allow me. <clears throat> When the battery voltage is drained to a low enough level, or the battery is disconnected as required for safe maintenance like you did, the windows will lose their programming. When the battery level falls, the memory in the windows is always the first to go...making it a good telltale sign of a weakening battery so you can start saving some of your lunch money for a new one.

What if the window dropps when you use the handle but goes back up as soon as you let go. Even with the door still open. Has anyone had this happen?

Discussed extensively. Bad "Door Open Switch" connected to the outside door handle assembly, but inside the door.

Here's an explanation of the bad door switch and a video on how to replace it.
