Default Fuel gauge issue

Just purchased a 1997 XK8 convertible and the gas gauge started acting up. There are times that the gauge doesn’t return to empty when shutting the car off. Then, when starting the car, the gauge reads high. I disconnected the wires from the sending unit, put a shunt across the connectors and turned the key on. The gauge does not return to empty. I assume that indicates a bad gauge. Am I correct in that assumption?

Thanx for any response.

As I mentioned in your other thread, take the dash out and manually move the gauge back to zero, and see how that gets on. I've had the same issue occasionally with my temp gauge.
