Default Fuel Pump Foibles

In the summer of 2010 I discovered that both my Fuel Pumps had failed after winter storage. Actually, the Secondary Pump probably failed a few years earlier without me noticing it. I visited a Indie and (including $470 labor), had 2 new Fuel Pumps, Screens and 2 new Link Leads, (all Jaguar OEM parts) installed for a total of $1374.

I decided to install a set of 2 Pushbuttons to "Exercise" the pumps during winter storage.

This worked OK for about 8 years when the (Very Seldom Used) Secondary Pump Failed. Would Draw Current but would not Spin.

This summer, I decided to replace the Non Functioning Secondary Pump. I bought a (Non OEM) Pump from SNG Barratt for $93 and paid a indie $380 to install it.

I realized that the Secondary Pump was suffering from VERY Infrequent use. I revised my Button Box to include an additional function. I replaced one of the buttons with a DPDT two-position Toggle Switch:

The Toggle Switch is wired to the Outputs of the 2 Fuel Pump Relays. It is wired to "Invert" the wiring feeding the 2 Pumps. Flipping the Switch Reverses which Pump is the Primary and which is the Secondary. The (now single) Pushbutton still works for exercising Either Pump in During Winter Storage.

Whenever I leave home, I have to open the Trunk (Boot) anyways, to unplug the Battery Maintainer. Then, I flip the Toggle Switch to the opposite position. This reverses which pump is the Primary and secondary. This will even out the Duty Cycle of the 2 Pumps. Time will tell if this proves effective in preventing Pump Failures.

Jaguar could have incorporated this in the ECM, but they probably couldn't foresee the crappy Ethanol infused Fuel that many of us are forced to use.
