Default Fuel Pumps

I have a 2000 XKR that we dont drive much. Probably only a few hundred miles in the last year and 2 miles in the last 4 months. Would not start last week so had to have it towed to my mechanic who told me both fuel pumps had to be replaced because of lack of use. He said that they can become gummed up and are ruined if the car just sits without running. Is this true?

Yes, fuel pumps seem to fail more often after sitting. If you pull the relay to the first pump, the second pump might still work and you can temporarily drive around on the second pump.

If the fuel is going to sit in the car more than three months, it should be treated with an antioxidant like Stabil. The stuff can go bad and cause all kinds of problems, and in an XKR, the pumps and injectors are gold.

My XKR sat over the Winter several years ago. Before I stopped driving it (for the winter), it ran Perfectly.

In the following Spring the car would not start. BOTH Pumps had failed. I had a independent service garage replace them.

About $1300 (Including 2 Pumps, 2 Harnesses and 2 sock filters).
