Default Fuel tank capacity

According to the owner's manual, the fuel tank capacity in my 2005 XKR is supposed to be about 19.8 gallons. But an article I read somewhere mentioned the capacity was 16.5 gallons. My non-scientific impression based on comparison of fill-up habits I had with my 95 Corvette versus the XKR also suggests a lower capacity than 19.8. For example, I know that the Corvette tank was about 20 gallons and both the Corvette and the XKR get similar mpg (14-16 around city streets). I have always gotten in the habit of filling my cars when I get to about 1/4-tank. In the Corvette, when I hit the 1/4-tank mark the distance traveled was always about 225-250 miles. But in the Jaguar (which gets similar mpg), it seems like to hit the 225-250 distance mark, the needle is below 1/4-tank. So either the mpg is less than the Corvette, or the tank is smaller.

Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks,

Doug

Just happened to have a receipt in my pocket for a fill up yesterday. Took 17.1 gal and was pretty low on the gauge but not at the bottom; had not turned on the low fuel light. Gotta be more than 16.5g.

A 2000 xk8 will hold 19.9 gal and they say 2 in reserve.

After replacing to many electronic fuel pumps on other cars I try to never let the gauge dip below 1/4. Its the fuel that cools the pump motor and keeps it from burning up. I doubt 2 gallons over the width of the tank will keep the pump submerged enough to cool it.

You mean that 2 of the 19.9 are in reserve or 2 in reserve in addition to the 19.9?

Two in reserve would mean two on top.

They say in addition to but I would not take it to the bank. I would make a few phone calls to jaguar for the capacity and reserve and see what they say. . If I recall I filled my 99 with 18.5gal as my wife drove me nuts to fill up..

I have personally ran the car out of gas twice. Once semi on purpose (testing the theory because I never filled up more then 18 gallons and second because I pushed it a little longer then I thought I would). That said I put gas dry in the tank and ran it down well to the bottom twice. After running it out I put 19.2 gallons in the tank on 2 occassions. Depending on how you drive, you have 15 to 25 miles to go when the light comes on... I pushed it to the end.

OK! I made a few calls and this is what I got. The tank on the xk8 1997 to 2006 is 75 liters, converted to gallons = 19.812903825000003. I also found out that “they” were wrong on the reserve. The fact is that you have NO reserve. Now this is what two other “they” said.

I think that what is meant by "reserve" does not really reflect the capacity of the tank but, rather, the way that the gas meter indications are set up. The lines on the gas gauge are probably set up so that the "empty" line is not really empty. When the needle is by the empty line and/or the light comes on, I suspect it means that you have probably used 17 gallons more or less and that the extra mileage you can go past the empty line is 2 gallons worth.

Try telling your wife this story. Just subsitute, reserve, for lady and that she was really just a friend but it never went any farther and that it was only a chance meeting and the night was young and nothing really happened but that she was on call just in case you were not available but nothing was ever going to happen because being on call is not the same as being called on.

Yeah right!!!!!!!!!!!! Y O U C A N S L E E P O N T H E C O U C H.
