funny noise when getting in back seat
just got my 2005 xk8 and truns out that the grand kids can actually sit in the back seat!!!
anyhow, when I raised the lever to put the front seat forward, it makes a whirring sound, like a motor- but nothing seems to be happening.
any idea what is supposed to be happening. I would guess that the seat is supposed to move forward but may be broken (seat does work when sitting in it)

The front button on the switchpack is moved in the direction shown in 'A' to move the seat backwards and forwards.
The only lever on the seat is the tilt lever to release the seat back so it can be tilted forwards. If there's a whirring noise and the headrest doesn't retract when you operate this lever, check the XK8/XKR FAQ's for the fix.

+1 on Graham's suggestion for the headrest motor. Mine doesn't work either, but I'm short enough the bottom setting works just fine.
When you tilt the seat forward, it tries to lower the headrest so it will clear the windshield header. Tilt it back in place and it wants to raise the headrest back up.
My fix? If you move the headrest selector switch to the lowest setting (all the way down if it was working), then when you tilt the seat forward for getting in the back, no noise. This is because it thinks the headrest is already fully retracted and the motor doesn't run.
If you wish to have the headrest go up and down, then see the DIY stickies as suggested to fix the internal cable. Rev. Sam even has a video how-to posted for the repair.
