Default Garage opener lights do not blink

Trying to clear old garage door opener settings. Lights do not blink when pressing and holding two outside buttons. Lost hand held remote and trying to set by using "learn" botton on opener control box.
Any ideas?

What year car do you have? The Homelink modules are different. Early models: '96-98 don't do rolling codes.

You don't have to clear old homelink codes to program new codes. Clearing is for when you sell the car, so the new owner can't open your garage.

Your garage door opener won't learn the homelink code, until you feed the homelink the code from your remote. Hold the remote button and the homelink button to be programmed at the same time and hold until the light rapidly flashes... THEN you can push the program button on the opener, run to the car and push the Homelink button, hold for a couple seconds and release. Do this two more times and the garage door should close.

I have an older garage door opener (Liftmaster) from 2000. I double-checked the openers' original instructions...1)press the "learn button" on the opener itself (a red button on my unit) with the car parked in the garage (had to climb a step ladder to reach the button); 2) you then have 20 seconds to press the preferred opener button in the car;3) the light on the garage opener (that's the light on the opener mechanism, not the little light in the car) will blink twice and your code is set.

That is correct to program the door opener, but you need to program the homelink, first, with the signal from your current remote.

Your 2000 opener may be rolling code. My five 2001 Liftmaster openers are all rolling code. A 1998 XK8 Homelink is more than likely not rolling code.

I swapped out my non-rolling code 1997 Homelink for a Rolling code Homelink I purchased on Ebay for $20. For the last 20 years the Homelink cases haven't changed much so even the brand new ones physically fit, but you may have to do a few tweaks due to the button length.

I put some picture of the mod in the How to/DIY Sticky for Homelink.

+1 This is similar to my reply in Salu498's previous post. I have programmed several different vehicles with Homelink without having to use a handheld remote and also without doing the total homelink erase that someone else mentioned was only needed when one sells their vehicle. I think that the homelink instructions may just be a hinderance if your opener does have a learn mode. In that case, just get a stepladder and follow you opener's instructions.

Let me reiterate... I have a '98 XK8 Coupe. I have a 2000 garage door opener (I unfortunately only have one). The Homelink instructions didn't work with my set-up; I tried the remote to Homelink method without success. All I can tell you is that I was only able to program the Homelink function in my car by following the procedure I described in my earlier post. I believe if you do some research in the Forum you'll find other discussions and similar solutions.
