Default Gauges not working, need help!

I converted my dash gauges to LEDs and was successful except now I am getting 10 beeps from the interior signal speaker on startup and none of my gauge's work! Fuel, Oil Pressure, Water Temp and Voltage all reading zero which I believe are signaling the car to send a low oil pressure and water level warning and gas gauge is lit "empty". I checked the fuse map for the driver's side facia fuse box and it shows a 5 amp instrument cluster fuse in position 18 but,, it must be for an earlier car as mine does not have one. I checked all other fuses in the box and all seem fine. Don't know if there is another fuse I should be checking or? The car starts, runs and tach works fine also, no transmission lock up. Any help would be appreciated.

Not much help, but did you disconnect the battery before taking the instrument panel out ?

I'm not educated enough to know the exact downside of not disconnecting the battery first, but the instructions I followed from this forum & a referenced u-tube video directed me to disconnect the battery before separating the two instrument electrical connectors. So it might be critical to do so.

Perhaps others can give some more helpful advice. Best of luck,

Z

Try a hard reset first. Disconnect the battery ground strap and touch it on the positive battery terminal for a few seconds. (That's not a short circuit if you think about it) Then reconnect the ground strap and see if it's been any help!

This is all assuming the battery is a good one and fully charged.

I am having the same type problem with my 88 XJ6 (VIN 6). Nothing on my instrument panel is working at all. I have checked the instrument cluster fuse and it is good. Any suggestions? Anybody think a hard reset will help?

Thanks in advance,
Phil

You're lucky. I hadn't started my Jag for quite a while, now I have no instrument panel function at all. Car runs and stops fine, just don't have a functioning instrument panel. If you find any success with your problem, let me know. It may give me a clue as to my problem.

I read an old thread with a similar poblem that he finally solved with a used panel. Found one on Ebay for $100 and it is on the way, will update later this week. I think the hard reset stopped my ten beep error signal.

When you take your existing panel out, check the connectors very carefully for bent or damaged pins - even one bad connection could cause havoc with your gauges.

I had done a hard reset by touching the negative cable to positive with no change. A local Jag expert told me that I needed to hold them for two minutes to completely empty the system which I did with no apparent effect. I recieved a used 2002 unit from Ebay and installed it but, it wouldn't even light up so, I reinstalled my original panel and viola! Guages work and error messages gone. I have a check engine light but I can get that resolved. Suffice it to say I am greatly relieved but, unfortunately, I don't know what solved the problem for sure,

This is why I don't like messing about with the instrument panel unless its absolutely necessary - its too important a part of the car's electronics. I suspect the panel either crashed in some way the first time you re-installed it (with the battery still connected) and the un-install/re-install reset it, or a dirty or bent connector pin seated properly the second time. Either way never take it apart again!

I agree, I did not realize the cluster was so connected to the ECU unlike older cars I work on where they just record inputs. However, I should have with all the pins on the connectors.

To change the bulbs you dont need to unplug the central three ..loads of play in the cable to work.
