Default Gearbox fault

I wonder if someone can help me I have an

XK8 1999

With a gearbox fault that started when I went around a corner at reasonable speed and I heard a very high pitch whizzy noise and then the box went into limp. Intially I got P0733 - 3rd gear incorrect ratio but after clearing the fault with SDS I got c1095 second gear incorrect ratio. The symptoms are the same - very juddery acceleration then limp.

The further complexity is this has happened whilst I have had a TRAC and ABS failure due I think to the usual module issue. I see on the web that sometimes this can confuse the box.

Could this be low transmission fluid, the related ABS module issue or mechanical gearbox failure and where should I start diagnosing.

Thanks

C1095 is a common ABS error. The repair is to resolder the two contacts for the ABS pump motor. A search of the forum will provide instructions or you can send the module to a repair service.

Check the level of the transmission fluid, instructions can be found with a search of the forum.

yes I have the work to do on the ABS but my question is can

low Transmission fluid
ABS fault code c1095

cause the two fault codes p0733 and p0732 or is this more likely a gear box out and rebuild ?

I am trying to work out if it is worth me jacking up the car and doing the fluid change/top up from axel stands plus fixing the ABS ror in reality this needs a full rebuild costing more than the car thus avoiding the work and sending it away.

thanks

Could be low fluid, and check your rear wheel bearings.

Thanks thats great.

On the wheel bearings. I guess just lift the car and look for excessive play. or is there further diagnostic for this ? Also strange that the bearings would impact gearbox with diff in the way ?

On transmission - Is there an easier way of topping up transmission fluid through say the cooler pipe ?

thanks

Appreciate it's a bit of a stretch, but "I heard a very high pitch whizzy noise and then the box went into limp." after a fairly energetic cornering made me wonder if it came from an ABS ring making contact with something it shouldn't, and I recalled razorboy's journey with a transmission issue that turned out to be something completely different. His is a 6HP box and not the 5HP you have, but see what you think of his his summary here:

You can check rear bearings with the car off the ground:- a little play in the vertical direction (6 o' clock to 12) is OK, but there should be none in the horizontal.

You can add fluid through the cooler line, but you still have to remove the fill plug with the engine running, in neutral, gearbox temp 30-50 C to check level.

Its not the wheel bearings I am afraid. Will check fluid level and revert.
