Default Gearbox oil to change or not to change?

I am about to service my XK, it's covered 110,000 and I dont think the gearbox oil has ever been touched.

I've done a bit of reding and this seems to be a bit of a grey area.

What are the general thoughts on changing servicing the box?

What oil should I use if I drain and fill it?

The box is fine and I have no issues with it.

Thanks in advance

You don't state the model year but I assume with that mileage it is pre '03 and has a ZF 5HP24 transmission. Jaguar says it is 'filled for life'. Not sure if it is the owner's life or the transmission's but either way that is BS.

ZF now recommends a 60k mile fluid change so you are about 50k miles over due.

That transmission uses LT 71141 specification ATF. That is available for $5, $12, $14, $20, $49 or more per quart. Your choice.

This has been a never ending discussion on the subject. Here is a link to just one: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ping-up-29776/

Yes, I would change it...maybe even twice because you can't get to 1/2 of it in the torque converter (don't flush, do a drain n fill, with a new filter of course).

Thumbs up Replace It

This is from a non-DIYer. Research (mechanics, magazines) convinced me to have it done.
Replaced it in my '98 at 70K. Had it done at an AAMCO tranny shop. They dropped the pan, replaced the filter, and used a Mobil 1 synthetic ATF (there may be more than one Mobil synthetic). Cost about $425.
Works perfectly and I like the peace of mind.

Hawkeye; That's a hefty price tag for a non-dealer shop but if they did it right it might be worth it. How many miles have you driven with the M1 in there? Did they explain why they used the M1? What kind of warranty did they give you if the fluid screws up the tranny?

My son runs a 2006 Mercedes and apparently they've recently moved from "lifetime" sealed to recommending an oil change every 70k miles.

Sorry, lost my password. Don't know why this site is so difficult to get into and move around in.
Had it flushed 16 months, but only 2,000 miles, ago. I thot it operated more smoothly than before, but could be imagining.
They said Jag fluid would be $100 more, and the M1 was the same formulation. About 1/2 of the expense was the M1; I guess the synthetic is expensive. Maybe there's a cheaper conventional fluid. I think I saw a thread in here with all the fluids.
The AAMCO invoice had only the tranny overhaul warranty printed on it and said (essentially) for other services, ask. I did not, so I don't know.
Good luck!
I'm going to put up a posting called "before you buy, read this" relating this and my other weird experiences. You might want to check it out.

Hi Guys ,
I'm having the same dilemma myself ,
mines done 132,000 on the original gearbox , gearchanges are super but if I change the oil and disturb any sediment or debris in the sump or suchlike will it pack in , or do I leave well alone and get a manual box fitted ?

All the best ,

Nik

I own two of the six-speed ZF boxes, one in our 2005 S-Type and one in our 2006 XK8. I've done quite a bit of research, including speaking with ZF's tech support group in Chicago, and my plan is to do drain-and-fills when the vehicles reach 90,000 miles or so. That is conditional upon the ZF's electrical connector sleeve not developing the dreaded leak that these boxes seem to be prone to. A sleeve leak will force my hand to go ahead with a drain-and-fill....

Our S-Type is approaching 70,000 miles with a perfectly-functioning ZF. Our XK8 is approaching 39,000 miles and also has a perfectly-functioning ZF. I will always wish that these ZF boxes had dipsticks and engine compartment-mounted fill tubes. Sure would be a lot easier to do the ATF drain-and-fills if they did....

changed mine at 75000. Cost about $75 for parts, and $50 for fluids. Labor is mine.
