Default Glovebox trivia

I have a quick, rather trivial question that's been annoying me about my XK8.

Does the little tray thingy circled in this photo of my glovebox have a an actual purpose?

It seems rather elaborate to just be a place to put a rubber bumper.

It looked to me like it should be a pen or pencil holder. Though I tried that out and it would pretty much need to be the worlds thinnest pen to fit in the the rubber grippy thing.

Any thoughts?

I've also wondered if this little bit of shelf was intended for anything specific or was just an odd bit of leftover space...

Although I no longer have an XK8 so I can't take a photo, I've used the clip for a slim Parker ballpoint.

The leftover space is for the optional Rechargeable Torch (P/N JLM 20104) as shown in the original XK8 Accessories Brochure.

I thought the slot was for a pen but I put a tire pressure gauge in that spot.

My 2004 does not have that upper shelf for books and torch. Looks like there is room for it though. I wonder if I can add that ?

Red, I use the small shelf for pen pencil and reading glasses. John

I also thought it was for a pen but my tyre pressure gauge fits a treat in there.

Inspired by GGG, I went to the local pen shop around the corner and got a Cross Classic Century Black Lacquer ballpoint. It was a toss up between the parker slim and the Cross; both would have fit (snugly).

I also got my no longer dimming rearview mirror off the car (without breaking the windshield), immediately sent off to to be repaired, and put my first coat of Zaino Z10 on the leather seats. So far I'm liking their leather scent a lot.

On the sillier side, I noticed by accident that the overhead console when oriented differently looks like a bit a cute, surprised, robot face...

When I worked at the Jag dealer we called the XK overhead console ET because it looked like the character movie face (PHONE HOME).

E.T.! I knew it was reminding me of something specific; I just couldn't quite place it...
