Default GPS Upgrade - Garmin nuvi3597LMT 5"!

XK8 / XKR Owners,

Got tired of looking at my 2003 XKR stock GPS display! Remover the original GPS display unit and fabricated a mounting plate to support a modern Garmin touch screen gps. Using drywall patch metal grid, I covered the two holes used for the original gps control switches. Using a standard 12VDC socket with leads extending to the passenger side fuse panel, the new gps was connected to a switched circuit. The installation looks nice and functions well. Also, the new gps can be easily removed (using it's original magnetic mount) to install software and data base updates. Please see the attached photos of the installation process.

Phillip, nice job, my compliments. Want to warn folks about one thing that drives me crazy - Garmin programed their units to turn the speed limit Red when exceeded. Some folks must love it, I'll just call it the mommy effect. Nothing you did Phillip, just don't want folks to be in for an annoying surprise. It's actually harder to focus on red as you get older too. John

Default Youtube video...

Saw this on youtube, and did it. Works ok but the white with red stripe wire is driving me crazy. Mine has no power at any time. Where does the red wire go? To what fuse or location? Logically, it should go through the key. Where is mine not getting power? Any suggestions? I will probably tear apart the dash soon if I can find no answer. Thanks!

I used the standard Garmin power cable that came with the GPS. Plugged it into a standard accessory 12VDC socket and then terminated to one of the power feeds located on the passenger side fuse panel. Didn't have to do anything with the GPS power supply wiring. The circuit used from the car was switched with the ignition switch. Everything works seamlessly!! Wish I would have seen the YouTube video before starting the project, will check it out.

I installed a 1450LM and discovered there's no way to turn it off until it spends several minutes loading maps, nag screen and operating system. The OFF button is covered up by the install, so I gotta wait with the ignition on until it cycles to the main screen before it can be turned off.
