Default GRRRRRRRR!!!!! Stupid Rocks!

Driving back from Florida this afternoon a pickup truck in front of me pulled over onto the shoulder. As it was pulling over it threw up a rock that hit my windshield right in the middle on the passenger side. It left a big star fracture and a crack all the way to the edge. Fortunately my insurance covers glass. I just wonder what it's going to do to my rates.

Strange Sam....shouldn't affect your rates!!

Over here if that happens, windscreen cover is included in the price and doesn't affect your rates if you renew.

Sam, here in S.C., insurance companies by law are required to replace windshields and NOT raise premiums. In one year I had 3 windshields replaced through claims on the same vehicle, one of which I was responsible for cracking. Made my claims and no rate increase, I have sinced switched insurance companies and the "new" searchs for better rate companies didn't mention that I had the windshield claims. Maybe unreported??

Oh, that's too bad Sam. But, I agree with everyone here - I don't believe there is any impact to your insurance rates for a broken windshield....and if you're lucky, maybe you'll get a free set of steak knives too....or maybe ten pizzas!

Ohh...That is really unamerican not to get something free with a windshield replacement. In my state, companies compete with each other by their giveaways. The next time I have a windshield replaced I'll send the steak knives to you in Mn. Have too many sets now anyway.

I finally got around to calling the insurance company today. I have a $100 deductible. They actually have the windshield in stock! They are coming to my house on Friday to replace it. While the guy has the windshield off I'm going to clean out the little light sensor. Hopefully that will fix the problem where my headlights are on most of the time.

I don't know if your concerned about the factory triple XXX windshield. I talked to a couple of glass companies and their prices weren't to bad, around $320.00 to $350.00 but it was not a labeled triple XXX which is the Jaguar glass. Cost at the dealer around 7 or 8 hundred and one of the companies told me they would install it for $150.00

Are there advantages to triple XXX windshields? I just googled it and couldn't find anything. Maybe I should google it on bing.

I don't think there is any advantage except maybe the resale value of the car, and I really don't know if it would. I know on my car I will try to keep it as original as possible, all though I have no intention of selling it, I'll let my kids worry about it.

Here's an update on my windshield replacement saga. SafeLite showed up last Wednesday to replace it. The guy had the wrong windshield with him so he said he had to go back to the shop to get the right one. He called me later and said he couldn't make it back that day. He was supposed to show up the following day. Then he was supposed to show up on Friday. Then Saturday. On Monday I told SafeLite to pound sand. I called Glass Doctor and made an appointment for Tuesday. I had to cancel that one because a meeting went long, but the Glass Doctor guy showed up this morning. He started disassembling the windshield and then realized that the windshield has apparently been replaced before. The last time it was repaired the repair company glued it down rather than using the 12 clips that are supposed to hold it in place. To remove it now will destroy the metal molding that goes around the windshield. In the process of trying to remove it he broke the existing windshield and now there's a bunch of cracks through it and the car is undriveable. He ordered the replacement molding and he's supposed to be back on Friday. We'll see..

Sam
That reveal molding runs about $400.00. It is held in by the clips, I removed mine last winter for repaint, very carefully, its hard, not being glued in. If they glued it in they ruined it, I can see where they might do that to save a buck. The windshield has the clips and the sealant. The old one will have to be cut out. Good Luck

Sam,

Jeez, that's too bad. This is now officially a royal PITA.

If this was covered earlier in the thread I missed it.
You've got rain-sensing wipers, yes? If so, you need the type of windshield that handles that. I almost let someone put the wrong type in my car a few years back. You probably had this covered.

Ugh... I wish people that don't know what they are doing would just leave cars alone. I've been the owner of many Mustangs, and I can tell you right now, the vast majority of them are just completely hacked up after a few years.

From improperly assembled drum brakes to hacked wiring harnesses, to busted molding to straight pipes with the factory clamps replaced with old style muffler clamps...

Sorry to hear the last replacement job was hacked up, Sam.

On a side note, eaglexkr, the auto glass companies are restricted in gift giving because they were jacking up the mandatory insurance rates for everybody. Glass companies were tacking on $100s of dollars to the price of their service and billing the insurance companies. As a result, everybody's base premiums were going up. The steaks get paid for somehow

$400??? Holy cow! My insurance is paying for it all, so the cost isn't a big deal to me, but that's just another delay in getting my windshield replaced.

Oh, by the way, they are using an OEM windshield. It does have the rain sensor, but the glass people are on top of that. The original cost was supposed to be around $900, but now that that molding has to be replaced I guess it's going to be closer to $1300 or $1400. I'm glad I have full coverage insurance.

I FINALLY got the windshield replaced. Glass Doctor ordered the metal trim pieces and they finally showed up. I don't know if this is true or not, but the glass guy said that I got the last two trim pieces available in the US. He said they aren't being made any more and there are no more in stock anywhere.

Now my rain sensor isn't working. When the glass guy removed it it broke apart. He said that it had been super-glued back together. Now I'm going to have to fight with the glass people to get it fixed.

Sam,
I'm a total noob but just wanted to say I have read through your ordeal and - OUCH! How incredibly annoying! Why people make crappy fixes on such beautiful cars is just beyond me. I will be wishing you good luck on getting the issue resolved.
Best,
Katharine
