If you haven't pushed the valet button then the valet key will open the trunk

The XJ owners seem to specialise in this. Their solution is to remove the licence plate and use a small screwdriver through the square holes to trip the lock lever. Here's a thread on the topic:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...d-58948/page2/

If the XK8 lock mechanism is similar (I don't know), it could be worth a try.

So did you get the new key programmed before opening the trunk?
If so does that mean that the original key doesn't work and you need to have both programmed now?
Am I right in thinking that an unprogrammed key would have opened the trunk then they could both have been done together?

Programming the key is for starting only. It does everything minus start the car. After I get the key out the trunk i have to take the car in for them to program the key to the car.

That was my point, are they going to charge you again?
They will have to re-programme both keys, old and new.

"ALL KEYS MUST BE PRESENT. KEYS NOT PRESENT WILL BE DELETED. DO YOU WISH TO CONTINUE?"

That is the message on the screen when programming key transponders to the vehicle.

You cannot ADD KEYS later, so have all keys with you when you get the new key configured to the vehicle.

If you want to drive about 500 or 600 miles to Decatur TX, I can programme them for you (with WDS), but it will be cheaper to have the dealer there do it.

You can buy key reprogramming kits on ebay for about$10, and new fobs either come with them or can be purchased for about $10-30. Of course, it probably won't say "Jaguar" on it. My wife used one of the reprogramming kits for her Nissan and it worked fine. I'm thinking about getting one for each of my vehicles just in case (although I do keep an extra key in my other pocket or at home all the time).

I tried a search in ebay for the key reprogramming kits and it returned 0 items.

North American spec. 1997 XK8 does not have a key transponder. There is no KTM, keys do not need to be configured.

All Jaguars for NA started the KTM setup in 1998MY onward.
