Gents, what adhesive should I use to glue the rear-view mirror mounting bracket back onto the black patch on the windscreesn?

Many many thanks for your advice...

Any parts store has the specific adhesive for the rear view mirror. Just make sure the "button" and glass are clean and free of all old adhesive. However, I believe the light/wiper sensor mounted just under the mirror uses a different adhesive.

It's all in the TSBs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 501-22
You can use products from the local auto parts store..
You can call a glass company. They install windscreens and mirrors ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure what can be found in "any parts store" in Kowloon. Maybe the nice people who maintain the Peninsula Hotel fleet can give you some mirror adhesive.

On my 03 with the rain sensor/lights sensor the dealer says I have to replace the complete windshield, just a new mirror rehung they don't do. I called my local windshield repair shop, they sell the correct window with the hardware for the mirror already mounted. On my car there is a round metal attachment part that is already mounted around the rain sensor on the window and you just snap in the rearview mirror onto it and connect the connectors back up and you are done. I am ganna try to remount my mirror on my own, ganna take up all the black stuff the link in this thread speaks of and clean the surface and remount my round metal part to the window and hopefully the mirror will snap back onto it. I think it is BS that I have to replace a perfectly good windshield for a freaking mirror replacement.

Sounds like BS to me too. I had the windshield replaced, not quite sure whether they reused the old mirror assembly or the new windshield came with a new unit mounted. Probably the former because it promptly fell off. The shop stuck it back on, free of charge and it's still stuck well and good after 3 months now.
And BTW, it's the rain sensor/electrochromic version, no compass.
Good luck with the fix.

Yes, I have the self-dimming type rear-view mirror, with the self-dimming function dead a long time ago. So I purchased a mirror with a forward video camera/recorder, built-in 2" monitor, and blue-tooth mic/speaker for my cell, which is strapped onto my existing mirror. That lasted for about a year before the weight became too much, and the mounting came off.

I have the rain sensor/electrochromic and compass. The window in my case comes with all the mounting stuff on it already, they just plug my mirror back in, snap it back onto the new mount on the window and that is that.

Thank you so much for referring me to a auto glass company. They indeed do this repair on a daily basis. And also thank you for pointing me to TSB 501-22, but the local Jaguar distributor is very expensive and so I didn't even bother calling them and went staight to the Yellow Pages for auto glass shops, and drove in to get the mirror glued back on, which costs me HK$280 or about US$36 for a 20-minute job. They used a pair of LOCTITE products: 7649 primer and 326 structural adhesive, which would most probably costs more than the repair cost I paid if I were to buy them and did the repair myself. And note these products do have expiry dates.

Hi bakntyme,

Sounds like you are well aware of the rapidly deterioring "any parts store" situation in Hong Kong & Kowloon. Many parts store have been driven out of business or have to more out to the New Territories to escape the sky-rocketing rents in Kowloon and Hong Kong.

The people who maintain the Hong Kong Peninsula Hotel's fleet of 12 LWB Rolls Royce Phantoms would simply bankrupt me to have my XK8's rear-view mirror glued back on, so I dare not approach them.

November is the month to drive around in Hong Kong in my XK8 Cabrio with the top down, and I'm loving every minute of it

Rearview Mirror fell off. I took it to 3 different glass shops. 1st two wouldn't try. 3rd tried by didn't hold. Decided to do it myself but I can't find the Permabond F246 Adhesive. Does anyone know of a substitute?

I had to replace the windshield. Nothing holds. The dealer, a fabricator, and a glass specialist all tried. Nothing would stay. This story is repeated all over by others. Sorry.

Best.

Looking at Post# 10 it looks like you could use a Loctite product. It may be worth a try.

If you look at post # 10 he uses a Locktite product. I think I would try it after following the cleaning procedure in the TSB.

For the record, my dealer tried that and more with no success.

I wish everyone luck, but I didn't have any.

Best!

Mine's still stuck on solid, 2 years + now. I can ask my indy what they used to stick it back on if useful to you.
