Help! xk8 wont start.......was a bad weekend!
OK.....here is the problem
Took the 2001 xk8 convert out to get gas.
Filled up and when restarted, check engine light and reduced performance warnings came up.
Returned home and disconnected battery........and then SHUT THE TRUNK WITH THE KEYS INSIDE!!!!!
crap.....OK.....tried to power up the car with the under the hood battery connection and got a BIG spark.....turns out the red battery cable was resting on the frame. Measured resistance after the fact and sure enough power to ground!
Got out my angle grinder and cut a hole in the pan so I could reach in and reconnect the hot lead. Hole is not too bad and easily fixed in case anyone has a similar loss of brain waves. better than cutting a hole in the trunk.
OK.....the car powered up but the door locks were cycling 3 to 4 times and then would stop, leaving the doors locked, top was down so just unlocked door and opened the trunk and got keys. Then tried to start.
All the dash lights came on, engine turns over fine but not even a hint of firing.
Reading the nice forum thread of how to start your jag, I am going thru the obvious.......check/charge the battery (car had been sitting, but started as usual the first time........forgot to mention that driving it back from being refueled the trans seemed to be jumping around.......maybe the engine was missing also...(wacky computer/low voltage maybe?????)...but it drove home OK other than that)......will get some starting fluid to check for spark, check the relays are seated and check the fuses.....check for pressure at fuel rail.
Anything else for first pass diagnostics?
With the accidental power to ground at the under hood connector, are there any fuses (etc) that come to mind to check first?
Will get a code reader......saw some good recommendations on the forum
This is a good problem, huh?
All thoughts are welcome!!!!!
I am an old school guy who would check the points and wiggle the carb throtle linkage checking for fuel........computers????????.......lol
Compression, fuel, spark.....viola!

Wow you have a lot going on so I would suggest checking the power distribution and all your fuses for your car and suggest NOT to use starting fluid it could cause a crack in the manifold. I would also suggest that you read your OBDII codes and post them for us to read. It is possible that one of the fuses in the high power module might be blown however, use caution when checking them they are directly off the battery.

OK
Battery was only taking a half charge so will take care of that first!!!!
Thanks for the heads up on the fuses. I think I found one fuse box in the trunk near the bumper on the passenger side.....aft of battery.
Will look for the other one tonight.
Its a 3rd car so time is not a factor so plenty of time to digest suggestions from this group.
A real learning experience....

There is also a box with 2 fuse links behind the spare tire. Just follow the + battery cable it goes right to that box.

Success!!!!!!
Put new battery in and car started right up.
Restricted performance warning is gone.
Check engine light is still on but am assuming a carry over from low battery.
Will get it checked. Can I clear the code or does it take a scanner to do it?
Thanks to everyone
(Now I just have to repair the hole I cut in the trunk pan! no biggie)
