Default How do I explain the clicking at drivers door?

My car as well as others I have seen here, my 03 XK8 does that clicking from time to time right up in front of the drivers door, behind the inner fender wheel well cover. I seem to recall that is an emissions device that on my year Jag is just loud and that the only fix Jag did was to wrap it up to quiet it down if I recall. The clicking comes and goes. I am selling my car, how do I explain what that is to someone that may ask about it if it clicks. What is the technical term for what it is doing????

My car has the tick. Comes and goes. Direct relationship with ambient temperature. Cold weather makes it tick. Real cold weather makes it tick louder.

I was concerned when I first heard it.

I have been hearing it (weather related since I bought the car 5+ years ago).

I am not concerned now.

Let it tick.

Yea mine does it the same as you say BLKCat. It is ticking a lot right now. But I read here sometime back it is normal. I just didn't know how to explain it to a perspective next owner. That print out makes that easy now.

There's alot of space in the wheel well that holds the purge valve, you could put all sorts of soundproofing in if it was too bothersome.

So Tim are you upgrading or leaving us ?

The ticking does not bother me but to the next tire kicker they will think it is broke, with the link given below and printed out I can show them it is a simple fix but that nothing is broke. Mine falls under the vin range where all they did was wrap it with insulation.

The car is on the market now. We have had it for a few years now but have decided to sell since I have two converts and pay off some debt with the sale of the car. I will still hang around. A few years down the road we will get another 97-02 model that I can do the Jag Spec conversion too.

I first heard the ticking begin last year after the weather cooled down, and it was most notable when it was very cold out; around 27F is when it's noticeably loud. I was concerned at first as I thought it was coming from the engine, until I opened the door, which is when it got louder, and I could tell it was coming from this area. This had to be a pure coincidence, but the first time I heard it, and opened the door to follow the noise, I slapped the area aside the dash that conceals the fuses on the drivers facia as it seemed loudest here and the noise ceased instantly. I thought noisy relay and the love tap fixed it, until I drove it again and the sound came back. For some reason after that it did not bug me, as it did not increase with revving the engine, and started and stopped regularly on it's own, plus during a period of odd warm weather in the middle of winter, it did not return at all while I drove. But I am glad to know for sure that it is on purpose.
