Default How does the inside Rearveiw Mirror adhere to the windshield?

Fellow Jaggers
I bought a used 2003 Jaguar XK8, and when I bought it it did not have an inside rear-view mirror. Therefore I am replacing that mirror now. The problem that I have encountered oh, is that I'm having trouble visualizing how this mirror adheres to the windshield. Can somebody share a diagram or explain how to move forward with this project?

Welcome to the '03 club!

Factory or replacement windshields come with a factory bonded bracket. A picture of what you have might help. There are several components in the setup, not sure of your starting point.

That shiny silver blade might have to be bent back in place, but that base slides onto a bracket factory-bonded to the windshield. The center of the bracket houses the circular rain sensor. What does that area look like in your car?

In essence my problem is the fact that the metal base is not on my glass any longer. So I don't know what it looked like and I don't know what the replacement part would look like to get

The standard answer is that the bracket comes with a replacement windshield, even after market. There is no separate part#. FWIW, many have tried and failed to secure a fallen bracket back on for any length of time. So, the salvage yard option is not great in this case.

In short, you need to call around and shop for a new windshield.

I tried and succeeded in getting mine glued back onto the windshield. You need urethane windshield adhesive. This glue is black and viscous (almost looks like tar) and is dispensed from a tube and a caulking gun style dispenser.

I know BMW has a part number for this glue, but it is expensive. I was able to have it attached at a local windshield repair shop.

So far it has not fallen and it has been two years since then.

If I recall correctly, this is the stuff they used:

It’s the same stuff used to secure the windshield to the body of the car.
