Default 2001 XK8 rearview mirror reattachment

I feel pretty stupid asking this question. A couple of days ago during the extreme cold weather I got in my Jag and when I went to adjust the mirror the whole thing fell off. There is a metal piece on the windshield and it looks like the base of the rear view mirror should slide over that metal piece and there is a place below it where a different part was glued to the glass. Can anyone give me any help on how to reattach my rear view mirror?

If the metal part is still attached to the glass, you are in luck. To re-attach the mirror to the base, you have to slide it _parallel_ to the glass. From memory, start near the top, and slide it down, parallel to the windshield. There are slides and blades that should catch and hold it in place once it reaches the right spot. You should be able to do this with one or 2 hands for guidance, this is not supposed to be hard.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

If I may chime in on this discussion, I'm working on re-attaching my mirror (just had the auto-dimming repaired), just as JagJag36 is - and while I was able to clip it back on it's not as sturdy as it used to be (it rattles slightly). Any suggestion as to how to fix this (and to maybe save the OP from suffering my fate)?
Cheers

You stated when adjusting the mirror it fell down. That would indicate that something is broken in the mirror. To remove the mirror from its mount the mirror has to be pushed upward off of its mount. If it fell down we need to figure out what broke. Pictures would help of the piece on the windscreen and the back of the mirror.
In the mean time so you can get an idea of what things are supposed to look like follow this link to a thread for repairing the XK8 mirror.

I went to the link in avern1's post- there is a picture of the inside of the pedestal with the following statement:

"Note the yellow paper stick-on tab marks the stamped rise which fits in the detent and locks the mirror pedestal in place on the windshield mount. The tabs on either side are what hold the mirror to its windshield mount."

On mine the piece marked by the yellow tab is missing and I can see the screw that holds the metal plate in the pedestal, so this is why mine wont lock in place. In that previous thread it said the rise is stamped but apparently it is only glued and came off. I guess tomorrow (when its daylight) I will look and see if I can find the "button" and glue it back. Anyone having additional thoughts, feel free to chime in.

First let me thank everyone. Each time I have a small problem with my Jag, I just post on here and I'm given the answer and can easily fix it. I have my mirror firmly attached and ready to go.

Here is what I learned. It is the screw (torx head) on the pedestal plate that sets in the space on the windshield plate. I wasn't pushing hard enough to get the mirror to slide far enough to set. You must reattach the mirror by placing the mirror plate just below the windshield plate then PUSHING UP NOT DOWN. Two small prongs on the pedestal plate require this. This is confirmed by the link avern1 listed showing the guy pushing down to remove the mirror.

Well done. I hope I can remember this thread if and when I need it (assuming the mirror attachment process did not change with the later models)....

Greetings! My mirror on my XK8(05) fell off. The only thing left on the glass is a skin that is the outline of the mirror base. Help!! Thanks!
