Quote: She is going to be told by the Jaguar dealer service that the transmission "is sealed for life" and that it is not "needed". They do not want the liability. But he is right all transmission fluid should be changed every 60,000 miles and the rear end fluid at 60k as well. "but they will tell you it is not required".. I believe however the filter is built into the trans pan "not a 100% sure" and that they will charge $995.00 for pan and $400.00 in service. That is what they charged me for my S-Type-R. "it was like brandnew afterwards" I had to sign a waiver for them to do it.

Are you saying then that "reprogramming" is not the solution?

Quote: The filter is a part of the pan. The pan and the ZF Lifeguard 6 fluid (6 liters) cost $240 from CTSC, the sleeve was another $15. I use an independent Jag shop for this and the labor there was a little under $200 for the pan and fluid change and $75 for the sleeve installation. This is a common price for the work. Dealers are too expensive to be doing simple fluid changes, and the guys that do them there are often grease monkeys. Independent shops usually use techs to do all the work, with the chance for better results.
That was back in the day for me when I had a ST=R 03 and a 05 XJR and money was never a concern, amazing what the credit crisis will do to for spending a $150.00 bucks on an oil change.. Now I live in my beachhouse, blog and tinker with older Jags and I have never been more happy doing my own work, even have a lift and built a paint booth. restoring 3-4 a year. Latest is a 94 XJ12. What is CTSC/website etc?

I came here and searched. haha. Looks like its not something huge i need to worry too much about. Ill have it looked at when i take it in for the 60,000 mile service. Unless it continues. So far its driven fine.

I heard the reprogramming (updating the TCM) does help most examples, but only if the fluid is at its proper level.

I would definitely try the "flash" and also find a garage to do your transimision fluid service. But IMO a service bulletin will becoming out judiging by the amount of owners that have come forward saying "it happened to me" on this thread.

LIfe went by far to fast last decade compared to now. Having hours to check every craigslist listing in the US for an XJ12 or etc is priceless I have been getting most parts from Rock Auto/Jagbits and a Jag dealer in GA and OH I will check out CTSC! thanks!

I posted on another thread that I had the transmission service done. Only a minor improvement. Will see what happens after driving it a bit.

Really hoping to see a difference. Hate to throw away money.

My gearbox was snatching (lurching) quite badly: turned out to have been over-filled with transmission fluid on account of a leaking seal. That was okay (sort of) until so much of the fluid escaped that the level was too low.

Had the seal replaced and a new load of fluid added (can't remember if the filter was changed but I imagine it was) and the gearbox has been fine since.

Best wishes, Colin
