Default Immobiliser on 1996 XK8

Having just purchased my 1996 Jaguar XK8, it did not come with the fob and only one key, however, to turn the immobiliser off I have to push one of those flat type jack plugs into a socket and then within about 10 seconds make sure that I turn the ignition on before the alarm sounds, my question is did the 1996 XK8 come with that type of immobiliser or do you think that the fob has been lost and therefore that plug type installed. I have looked at various sites selling fobs, but that all seem to start from 1997, even though the handbook has details about how to use the fob. If it did come with the fob do you think it is possible to return it to its original security system of keyless entry, I know it has to be programmed and perhaps rewired, its just a pain fumbling around with the plug and then turning the key quickly, I think 9 times out of 10 I set the alarm off, that's my age I suppose.

No, that's an after-market immobiliser. It shouldn't have anything to do with the fob being lost because immobilisation is switched off by the transponder in the key, so you probably have two separate immobilisers in play!

Default Immobiliser

Thanks for your reply Bladerunner 919, I appreciate it, that puts a different light on the subject, I will have to find out why they put another immobilser in play, looks like I am off to the dealer.

It's probably nothing more serious than the PO losing the fobs and fitting an aftermarket immobiliser rather than buying replacement Jaguar fobs.

However, it could be an expensive visit to the dealer if they start unpicking any wiring modifications made to fit the secondary immobiliser.

Default Immobiliser

Thank you Graham, I thought that might be the case, you would have thought that the PO would have spent the money and replaced the fobs, I am sure it wasn't that cheap to install an aftermarket immobiliser. However, with my aged hands fumbling around with that plug, I will try and obtain a quote from the dealer to see how much it would cost to modify the wiring back to what it should have been and purchase a Jaguar fob.

Replacing the fobs with an immobiliser wouldn't make sense - the immobilisation of the car is passive and is entirely dependent on the transponder in the key. The only functionality lost with the fob would be remote locking, which isn't replicated by the second immobiliser.

Thanks for your reply Bladerunner919, I fully understand about the transponder in the key and its function and the function of the fob, I am just confused why install the second immobiliser (which is a real pain) if the transponder in the key disarms the alarm, seems no point to me having a second immobiliser, unless its there for extra security, being a convertible, cant ask the PO as he has moved.

Oh, I realise that, was merely commenting on the mystery surrounding the reasons why!

Hi bladerunner919

It certainly is a mystery as to why, I thank you for your replies I appreciate it, initially I wasn't aware of a transponder in the key until you mentioned this, being a new member and first time owner of a Jaguar its so enlightening to have an input from members of the forum, the car is going in to have the handbrake looked at next week so hopefully they may be able to shed some light on why. I will keep you informed.

Are all cars fitted with immobiliser from factory?
Reason l ask is the build sheet for my 2000 xkr (Australian market) clearly states "less engine immobiliser" next line "with safeguard anti theft sys. (Pats)

The PATS part seems normal. I didn't realise there (also?) was an immo along the lines posted as PATS is an immo. Very confusing!

I expect it's fairly well covered in the workshop manual and tech guides. Tends not to be FULL info as they're not trying to spell it all out to thieves.
