Hi rod9669,

I'm not sure what you mean when you say that Forté and Redex are "old fashioned." I couldn't find a Material Safety Data Sheet for Forté Petrol Specialist Injector Cleaner, but I did find one for Redex Petrol Fuel Injection Cleaner, and if anything, it is very similar to, yet more complex than BG 44K. Here are the contents of Redex from the MSDS:

Here are the contents of BG 44K:

Note that Redex and BG 44K are both composed primarily of CAS 64742-48-9 Naptha (Petroleum) Hydrotreated, Heavy, and both also include CAS 64742-95-6 Solvent Naptha (Petroleum), Light Aromatic, and CAS 95-63-6 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene ethylbenzene. Stoddard Solvent CAS 8052-41-3 is also known as Naptha, Mineral Spirits or White Spirits and is used in dry cleaning clothes. If Redex is "old fashioned," then certainly BG 44K must be also, since the two products are so chemically similar.

Here are the contents of Techron Concentrate Plus:

Like Redex and 44K, Concentrate Plus also includes CAS 64742-95-6. But its primary ingredient is CAS 64742-47-8. This is also known as Aviation Fuel, Mineral Spirits Low Aromatic, Hydrotreated Kerosene, etc., but it's just another solvent from the "paint thinner" family. Chevron does not disclose the details of the polyether amine, but company literature describes it as a detergent effective in dissolving deposits in automotive engines. This is apparently the ingredient that prompted BMW engineers to have Techron Concentrate Plus private-branded for use at BMW dealerships. See the attached BMW Service Information Bulletin, which is interesting in that it states that BMW's own tests have provent that the polyether amine is effective in reducing deposits in injectors, on valves, and in the combustion chamber, and that when used as directed, it will not harm fuel system components.

Another interesting fuel system cleaner that also includes polyether amine is Redline Oil SI-1. Redline claims that many BMW dealerships use it, and I saw one online reference that suggested it may even be approved by BMW for use in its motorcycles, but I have not been able to confirm this:

I don't have anything against BG and its excellent products, and I have used 44K and MOA myself. But as is true of products from other companies that use closed distribution networks and whose business models include a hefty profit margin for the local distributor (e.g. Amsoil, Interstate Batteries), there are often similar, excellent products available from other companies at lower cost.

Cheers,

Don
