Default Jag or Land Rover

My wife has been eyeballing a used Land Rover with a 4.0 that looks like the one in my @001 XK8. Is there any correlation there? In other words, do they suffer the same timing chain tensioner issues.
Thanks,
Mike

What year Land Rover? The reason that I ask is that I work on a fair number of Land Rovers, and I haven't seen one that had an early enough engine to have a tensioner problem. LR was using BMW V8's, and then shifted to the Jag engine, and now has gone on the to Ford engine (similar to Jag, but...). Unless someone out there knows differently, I presume any Rover built after, say, "2002" would not have a tensioner issue. Personally, I wouldn't own a Land Rover unless I had plenty of time and money to invest in it at a local repair shop! I know... "sour grapes"! I simply find them to be the most technically problematic of any vehicle that I work on. (I get 'em when they have between 50k and 200k miles on them) But, they sure are popular!

Amusingly, just from your title there, the vehicle I almost pulled the trigger on last year a week before I found my XKR was a 1995 Range Rover Classic... why is that? :P

Still want one.

1995 Range Rover Classic would have the Rover 3.9V8 (originally a Buick design as a 3.5) - I'm assuming same spec. as U.K. market.

Correct about the BMW & Jag part, but a bit off on the Ford part.

Only Ford engines in LR's are the Diesel V6 (and that was a joint-venture motor with Peugeot) the 2.0L Turbo petrol 4 in the Evoque and the 4-cylinder diesels, the V8's have only been Rover, BMW and Jag, the V8 diesel is exclusively Land Rover.

I worked on a fairly new Land Rover just last week with a Ford V8 under the hood. 4.6 if I recall. Definitely was NOT a Jag engine! As for the Classic LR; better get one fast if you want one. I am seeing these prices going through the roof in my area. Really nice Classic LR's can bring $13,500 these days. I did an inspection on one yesterday that the man was asking $5500. It wasn't perfect by a long shot, but it was all there and all working. Not bad looking, either.

Ok. I became curious about the comment on the Ford engine, so I did some digging. I would have sworn the engine that I remembered was a Ford V8. It was very unlike the Jaguar style V8's that we are all familiar with. Looking down from the top of the engine, you can see no coil packs or panels in the rocker covers concealing the coils. I could not see the fuel injectors, as one typically can. The rocker covers had thick, foam silencing panels attached. I remember the model year as being 2008-2010. But, as mentioned, I see no Ford relationships listed anywhere! Did they change the newer LR engines that much? I mean, I have worked on the newer XK and XKR engines, and they look normal to me. Got me wondering now! Sorry to get off-track here.

2009/2010 model it might have been the 5.0L AJ133 engine? Very different to the earlier AJ26/27/33/34, and in no way related to Ford engines.
