Fellow Jag lovers,

My 2000 XK8 transmission is leaking fluid and is slipping. Topped off the fluid and it still slipping. Mechanic is saying 5000 dollars to repair. The one thing that is puzzling me is that the mechanic pulled a bunch of codes off the computer. I'm not talking on or two codes but like 20 codes Could there be an electrical issue causing the transmission to slip. I really love this car too much to just junk it does anyone have any suggestion or is it time to let it go.

Is the MIL on? If so, what DTCs are stored in the system? Post them here. Before condemning the gearbox, be sure there are no engine misfires causing the TCM to put the gearbox into a 'limp' mode.

It is also helpful to know the number of kilometres/miles on the vehicle and what other work has recently been done. Has the gearbox ever been serviced and had a fluid change?

The gearbox fitted to the normally aspirated X100 is the ZF 5HP24, which you may be able to find in a breaker's yard. There are also 'refurbished' units for sale on eBay for significantly less than what that shop quoted.

I've had slipping that was cured by adding fluid. When you say 'topped off', how did you decide how much fluid was correct?

Let me provide a little bit more data on the issue.

1) I have a yellow engine check light and a restricted performance message
2) There were 8 codes provided by the mechanic. I did a internet search but could not find some of these codes they are 42012, 9794H, 38804, B1595, B2368, A330H, 41776 and 71242.

Any insight into this issue would is greatly appreciated.

The DTCs are formatted with an alpha digit at the beginning to identify which part of the vehicle has an issue. For example P0420 for the Bank1 catalyst system efficiency below threshold.

Those codes look like junk. Ask for proper ones

 

Only guidance I can give you is slipping is not good. Reason I say that is clutch discs don't hold up very long to slipping (surprisingly a very short time). Clutch discs (not steels) are merely paper lined and when they get cooked they are pretty much done.

Do electronics, fluid level, filters and age play a part in gear boxes, answer is absolutely yes. However, when damage is done it can't be undone with simple fixes.

My advice would be to drain the fluid and drop the pan. Dark fluid is not dirty fluid. It's burnt from slipping clutch discs causing excessive heat to cook your fluid.

Not trying to be the bearer of bad new here but, I would rather you not spend a lot more of your money only to find out that you will need a major rebuild or replacement transmission.

Thanks for all the help. I've decided to sort out as many of the problems as i can before giving up on the Jag. Drove the car home from the shop on Sunday still had the reduced performance indicator and engine check light but the transmission wasn't slipping. I've had it sitting in the garage for a week and there is nothing dripping out of the transmission. Pretty confused but decided to tackle the other issue first.

1) Discovered a coolant leak by the thermostat housing so I'm going to tackle this first
2) Purchased an Diagnostic monitor and read out the codes from the computer, These are the codes P0332 Knock sensor left bank. Performed a ohms check on the sensor and it appears to be bad also, there was a lot of coolant around the sensor and wire harness so I'm thinking this could be part of that issue. P0352 Cylinder #2 misfire. P0302 coil pack or spark plug maybe. P1316 bad spark plug maybe.

There were no code pertaining to the transmission a good thing I hope.
