Default Which Jaguar XK should I buy?

Alright, so I found a few Jaguars I really like

One is 10,500, for a 1997 XK8 convertible with about 43,000 miles. Outside condition is good, the white interior could use some cleaning.

What should I look out for when buying an XK? And what things normally go wrong?

We really need a sticky for this question.

This is a question best answered by your own research on the forum. Early cars had issues, high mileage creates issues. Overall, these cars represent a really great value in the market at the moment. There are lots of them out there so take a few days and educate yourself and then the answer will be obvious.

hmmm, tough choice. Once you add some timing chain upgrade to either of the first two, you'll be in the ballpark on the 03. Both the 00 and 03 will most likely appreciate a transmission service however. There's pluses and minuses on each option, but if it were me, i'd lean toward the 03. The 97s are real twitchy, and you'll most likely find other problems along the way that the 00 and 03 won't suffer. I worry about the high mileage on the XKR. If it was run hard, there may be future transmission problems to consider. The 03, though it has high mileage, may have handled the power better. I don't know...just spouting off I suppose.

Anyway, that's my choice.

Build a decision table in Excel. Decide what options you would like to have and what if anything would be a deal breaker. Assign points to each and begin your research. There are many vehicles available across the country. Spend some time gettting to know your options and make an informed decision.

I would lean toward the 03 !! Newer engine, 6sp tranny, lot of the early issues worked out. Beautiful color too!

Tim, check your PM's. My decision table was built for an XJ but can easily be reworked for anything you like.

The choices you present have clear cut differences between model years and condtion. If you are having difficultly in selecting one over the other, I think you need to continue your research and learn more about the XK8. By the time I was ready to buy, I had looked at 25 or more cars, and was familiar with problem areas and model years. When the right car appeared, there was no hesitation whatsoever. Your decision should be equally clear.

JackJohn, do you have one of those "decision tables" in Excel for women? That would save mankind an untold amount of grief.

Kevin, cars, motorcycles and other mechanized things are quantifiable, women are not.

Default Thanks, JackJohn for that

brilliant insight. All these years I have thought that women were quantifiable. I guess that is where I have gone wrong. I am hoping that you understood that my comment was meant in good humor, and that your response was not snide. That, of course, is up to you to determine.

I assume all is in good humor. Certainly didn't intend to hijack Roadsterman's thread. I wonder how he's coming along on picking out a Jag.

I'm still trying to find the right one, lol, I haven't had the time lately to get back on the forum. Normally buying a car for me takes like a week, but I want this purchase to be special I guess, the right XK

Ben Stiller used a risk/reward software program for women in 'Along Came Polly'. It can be done!

I keep on changing my mind about the cars! it's pretty annoying because I have just stumbled upon a 2003 Jaguar S-type R with only 63k miles for 11,950.

I've never really owned a Jaguar before so.

I just want this car to last me a while. I mean I've never seen these cars go more than 100,000 miles before someone sells it.

If you want a little more rear leg room and nicer interior appointments and comfort...with the same go-juice, get that S-typeR!

If you want a convertible, a shelf in the back for your backpack and a little more aerodyanmic prowess... go the XK route.

Both have the same engine and transmission.

If you don't get the sTypeR, send me the info...I may get it myself! Am I kidding... maybe.
