I picked up a new gasket today.

Once the tb was off I noticed this, I guess it is the egr valve, I hope the smoke was not coming from it.

The manifold below the TB was pretty dirty, is that normal?

The new and old gasket.

It was just a 10min job to get the new gasket fitted but as there is snow on the ground tonight I did not give it a test drive or smoke test yet. Results later.

I smoke tested again today and there were no leaks so the new gasket worked, after a drive the trims were.

LTFT1 6
LTFT2 0

I am now wondering about the upper 02 sensor on bank one, it has never been changed, anyone know what the life of an O2 sensor is?

I just found a Bosch web site that recommended formal testing or replacement at 100k miles. I just replaced the bank 2 pre cat recently so will pick up a new one for bank 1 today.

I swapped in the new bank one O2 sensor, it is the easiest to access and the job was done in 10 mins. Did a hard reset and then 30 min drive, now the LTFTs are;

LTFT1 3.8
LTFT2 0

I guess I am happy with that for the time being.

Nice one! Thanks for documenting your efforts. As soon as mine is off the axle stands I hope to report a change thanks to an 02 swap. If not - I'll be building a smoke machine!

Hi

My previous post was concerning a P430 code for which I could get information about ;

Now I collected the "Freeze frame data" from my OBDII; here it is :

Fuel Syst 1 CL
" " 2 CL

Load 34.5%
ETC 192°F

Short fuel 1= 0.0%
Long fuel 1= -0,8%

Short fuel 2=0.8%
Long fuel 2= -0.8%

RPM=2025
VSS=55mph
IAT=55°F

MAF=3,764 Lbs/mn
TP=12.2%

I've got the CEL on. I believe that the catalyst system or O2 sensors need to be checked.

Could a fuel injector (leaking) make the 430 code coming too ?

Here's the list of possible causes for that code on an aj27

HO2S disconnected
HO2S to ECM wiring fault
HO2S heater to ECM wiring fault
HO2S heater failure
Upstream HO2S failure
Downstream HO2S failure
Catalyst failure

The code is for poor efficiency, which as I understand it is based on the difference between the downstream and upstream (of the cat) sensors. If the cat isn't working properly, there won't be much change in lambda values.
So if any of those three parts - upstream sensor, cat itself, downstream sensor is toast then you'd expect this code.

I'm no expert but I think if your mixture is off due to an injector leak, the cat should still perform its job and you wouldn't expect this code if the sensors and cat are ok. But I stand to be corrected!

Just a quick note to thank RaceDiagnostics again for his smoke machine post. Mine helped me find a leak under the part load breather which is on the opposite bank to where I expected based on my fuel trim values!

Thierry, with those trims you have no obvious leaks and as you've no other codes may well have a dead cat. Maybe pull O2 sensor and look in with borescope and/or use IR gun to see temp drops across cats.

Thanks JagV8 for your help !

This is the 3rd time the CEL come on ; 1st time the light went off by itself few days after , while running the car. Then it came back 3 or 4 months after and disappeared again few days later ; a mechanic finally made a reset(erasing code) but I could not get the dedicated code.. I bought an OBD2 in order to read by myself the codes when the CEL would come back. And it did a week after !

I have not found any other code than 430 & 1111 (which is normal for this one).

I'll will try to proceed ,more probably with an IR gun but how should I make a temp check with ?
Using a borescope , what should I expect to see if the cat is out ? (I never had a look at this specific part).

Thx

Thierry

You can look for different temps across the cats. Look on the net for photos of good cats and then look to see if yours is/are not like that.

Might just be easier to go to an exhaust shop
