Default Lost sport mode function ....

I was leaving the gym today when the car died in the parking lot (fortunately not in cross-traffic). It started right up but I had lost sport mode function. Cycling the switch does nothing and the red LED does not come on. The car shifts just like it was in D regardless of the position of the lever. The previous owner had a similar problem at 14400 miles (I now have 36200). The service records he provided with the car indicate that the shop (Marin Luxury Cars) eventually narrowed it down to "sport mode inop due to failed linear switch". Any idea where that switch is (if it's the same problem)?
I'll connect the Auto Enginuity to it later today to see if it threw any codes. I'm pretty sure it's still on the original battery too. Would a flaky battery cause problems like this?

Hmmm, typical Jaguar electricals. after one key-on/key-off it fixed itself. don't you hate that when something electrical dies and won't stay dead so you can troubleshoot it?
Thank you very much for the post above though. Every little bit helps add to my store of knowledge. I appreciate it.

What troubles me more was the sudden complete power-down of the vehicle. I can live with loss of sport mode, but the car shut down just as if I had turned the ignition switch off. Could be scary in traffic. Are the ignition switches prone to such failures? I have nothing heavy on the key ring other than the remote that might cause mechanical wear, but I don't know about previous owners.
Haven't had a chance to check for codes yet since the laptop that my software is on took a dump.

Got a chance to download codes today. P1446 and P1571 relate to the brake switch issue which I haven't fixed yet. P1582 can get set if there is an engine stall, which is what seemed to happen. It says flight recorder data stored. Is that data retrievable with the Auto-Enginuity software (I'm obviously not an expert user)?

Is it possible that you bumped the key with your knee? I've done it once or twice (but then again, I'm 6'8" so its not too surprising)

EDIT: Never mind, just saw your post with codes.
