Angry Low Coolant Message

I have a 2002 XKR with a low coolant message when the reservoir is full. I replaced the sensor first with no change in the error message. I then replaced the reservoir and still it the dang error message. What should I do next? Thanks.

Check the harness and brown harness connector to the sensor.

From memory, there has been quite a number of postings recently describing these new tanks as faulty. You would have to check the actual measurement at the sensor to be sure. A turkey baster-type tool is great to remove the coolant from the tank without a spill. The sensor is separate, as you know, and I believe the fault is with the float inside the tank. In short, you likely did nothing wrong, but were provided a faulty tank. There is likely a bad batch of these tanks out there, and we have somehow been put in charge of quality control.

Or maybe there just one faulty tank that keeps being shipped and returned, and the vendor has a bet going on how long this can go on...

I'm not sure how to check the actual measurement at the sensor. If I empty the reservoir, it should register low. I really appreciate any comments. I'm an accountant not a mechanic.

No need to apologise. Some of the best advice I've ever had has come from accountants and the worst has come from mechanics.

To determine if it's a harness or a sensor fault, disconnect the harness and bridge across bridge the two pins of the brown connector using a short length of wire or even an opened paper clip. With the ignition ON, bridged/open alternately should set the warning ON/OFF. If this doesn't happen, there's a harness fault; if it does, the issue is with the sensor.

The sensors are known to stick so I wouldn't even bother to get into considerations of testing - the only real option is replacement. If you purchased a new OE Expansion Tank, it will have come complete with sensor. Send the Tank back for a replacement.
