Question Lower rear end

My car is about finished, but my front wheels are tucked nicely inside the wheel wells, and my rear wheel wells are up a couple inches like a 70s high school kid's car.

Is there a correct way to lower the rear end, without having it squat??.....Thanks....Mike

Mike, You didn't mention it so let me ask - Are you sure the ride height is correct for the front? Mine's a little low and it looks like you described. I just bought upper shock mounts and shocks to address it. Double check me (search the forum) the front is supposed to be 15.75 inches (center of wheel to top of wheel well arch).

Good luck with it.

H&R sport lowering springs will do the trick, 1 1/2" drop. You will need shims on the half shafts to keep the alinement correct and prevent the squat look.

There are a few options for lowering springs, H&R, Mina, Adamesh to name a few.

I chose Adamesh as they had the smallest drop at about 1" and Jandreu is right about needing shims to keep the alignment correct.

You might be able to do it on the car with a very compact spring compressor or you can drop the subframe and have more room to work.

My rear wheels are 15.5", and my front wheels are 14". I guess I might be putting upper shock mounts on, because shocks aren't supposed to do anything except dampen return, when the shocks are expanded or depressed. I sure do like the look of the wheels filling up the wheel wells though, and that wouldn't change no matter what size wheel is put on, because the circumference needs to be the same. I might just lower the rear, to keep the look I like. I'm so torn....Thanks.....Mike

My front was 14.25 before and 15.5 after changing shocks and upper mounts. Probably the new lower shock bushing and upper mounts helped not changing the actual shock but the complete shock with bushing is only a few bucks more than just the lower bushing.

You should fix the front and then lower the whole car for the look your after.

On another tack, reading the other posts about shims, that you need to add or remove, when lowering the car. Is this the same type of suspension, that Rolls Royce had, or have, where the whole works is held together, by the 2 U-joints, and outer wheel bearing on each rear axle, for a comfortable ride?

If it is, it looks like I will need to get out my come along, to pull things back together, after the lowering deed is done, or am I mistaken?

I was wondering why those U-joints were so huge, when I was in the back of the car repairing the evap system, and doing a drain and fill, of the differential.(they are larger than a 1 ton pick up truck's) Please tell me this is not so. If it is, I guess I will be using my angle gauge for the first time, since the 80s.....Be cool....Mike

The Drive Half Shafts form the upper suspension members (same as Corvette). The Half Shafts each have a Shim to adjust the Camber. I changed the Shims from the factory 4.0mm to 7.5mm to regain the correct Camber after Lowering the Rear.
