Question Lumps of Clay???

I found these two lumps of clay at the bottom corners of the metal plate at the front of the trunk. I assume the metal plate is to shield the gas tank. But what on earth are these lumps of clay? I assume they've fallen from somewhere up above but since I don't know what they're for I'm not sure where to return them. Any suggestions please?

Also, what is behind this metal plate besides the gas tank?

Lump of clay removed and sitting on fuse box.

Hi TropiCat
I've owned my XK8 for quite a few years and spent a bit of time in the trunk trying to devise a way to change the diff oil and other pointless pastimes and I've never come across the lumps of clay. you're right about the metal plate, as far as I can remember it just hides the fuel tank. Maybe your lumps of clay were left by a previous owner or maybe some one is trying to make you think you are going mad. Done anything to annoy a family member recently?
Cheers
Pete

So you think they're a 'free gift' from a previous owner? Now I need to remove this stupid plate and find out what other treasures the owner(s) left. #%^&!

Thanks.

When the tanks pushed into place they stuff rubber or in your case clay to take up any movement to keep the tank tight.
