Almost every time I start my 2000xk8 and start to drive, I get "trans.fault and or "restricted perf." There is no noticeable lack of perf. and the messages go away after abt. a mile. Is this normal?

 

Not normal.

Usually a good place to start is to read the codes but...

I had a similar problem when the battery was getting old where the message would come when cranking but no other time. You can usually get a battery test done at the auto parts store. Mine passed the test marginally, but I replaced it anyway.

Messages stopped occurring with the new battery and the car cranks over noticeably faster now.

Definitely not normal and I'd also suspect the battery condition as the culprit.

battery is 1yr. old. checked voltage after sitting 2 days. voltage was12.7. started engine and voltage went to 14.7. I think the batt. and charging is o.k. so I don't know why I get these messages.

 

mistake. charging went to 14.38.
