Default Mina vs. K&N

Any opinions on using the K&N flat filter in the stock filter box versus Mina Gallery air intake?

Default Had both

My car had the Mina intake when I bought it. It let too much hot engine air in. I got rid of it and installed a factory box from eBay. I put a flat K&N filter in it. It was slightly better than the Mina set up. Then I added an extra intake snorkel to the box that brought air in from behind the headlight. That made a bigger difference. Cool air rules.

I did a write-up on it here: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...r-boxes-76906/

Mina greatly improved their intake with separation panel to divorce the air filter element from underneath hood hot air.

Jeff,

Did your Mina intake have the seperation panel that bfsgross mentioned?

Here's a picture of it on the Mina site, it still looks less than desirable as it's still in the engine bay:

I want to put one of these on my XK8, my brother has one on his 1999, and the induction noise is FANTASTIC! Is the performance really that affected by hot air??

Default Separation panel

Yes, mine had the separation panel as pictured. It is an insufficient design, allowing hot air to *easily* blow all around it. It is not custom fitted to seal off hot air. Those 'heat blocker panels' are for marketing purposes.

Hot air is *horrible* for performance.

If you're going to pull air into the intake from inside the engine bay, you can't beat a modified factory air box for cold air intake. It is truly sealed off and has snorkels that reach out to the cooler air. They even provide more air than a 3.5" custom intake can pull in by several square inches.

Since I have an STR with a Mina intake, I can't attest for the XKR, however, the STR has plenty of room for the air filter to sit where the stock airbox sat, and there's generous size passages for cool air to reach the filter element from the headlamp area and underneath.
