ASL is automatic speed limiter. The part numbers are under "information systems and controls>switches and cigar lighters" if you have EPC. If not, the part number for an XK8 with a VIN after A30645 (which should be you) is C2N1385

The cover is not available separately from Jaguar.

Always try forum Sponsors first. For example, S N G Barratt list the ASL switch:

As well as being lower cost than Jaguar ($170 against $223 from Jaguar), you could get a discount if you mention forum membership when ordering.

The same thing happenned to my Sport button. Can I buy the replacement part (#LNC 6220 AA), remove the top part, and somehow attach it to mine (glue)? Easier than reinstalling the entire switch.

For the little time and effort involved in removing the bright trim and the veneer panel, I wouldn't risk damaging a new switch.

Totally agree. With the screwed in bezel, this is a 5 minute job.

Yes, but you do not need the glue. My 2003 XKR was missing the 'S' button top cap as well, I purchased the whole switch from a member parting out an older MY XKR, he would only sell the assembly and not the cap separately, but it was only like 30 bucks for the whole thing, and now I have a spare switch. When it arrived, I unsnapped the 'S' button top cap from the switch, and snapped it onto my vehicle's switch. It snaps on with four very small and easily breakable 'L' shaped tabs, two at the top and two at the bottom, that lock into four square holes in the switch casing. These square holes can be seen with a flashlight, and the switch in the on position, (up), from the sides. To remove the cap, use a unfolded paper clip, or jewelers screwdriver to depress the cap locking tabs from the outside of the switch casing, after the first one goes, the rest follow suit without hesitation. Then snap the new cap onto the old switch in the console, bottom tabs first at a slight angle, then tops with slight finger pressure on the tabs to clear the outer switch casing and lock into place.

Thank-you! I had a feeling that, if the top of mine came off, the top of a replacement would also be removable

I have no doubt it's just a 5-minute job to install a new switch - for someone who's done it before and has the tools.

Less than that to replace the switch cap. I have included a picture of the switch assembly I received, if you click it once to open the center screen shot, then double click on the image again, it will open a full screen image, and you will be able to zoom in on the 'S' button. In the lower right hand corner of the switch down from the 'S', you will be able to see one of the square holed cutouts in the switch casing, and the tab locked in place securing the cap. This is where you put a very small screwdriver, or unfolded paper clip, and push lightly to release the tab and cover. It also shows how paper thin the cap is, as it is a different color black than the switch casing. I have already knocked the cap off once on accident while wiping the console down, without breaking any of the 'L' shaped tabs. It definitely has a 'sweet spot' on it, that when hit just right, allows the cap to pop right off, without damaging the tabs or cutouts, and is probably why so many people are looking for them, especially after a car wash.

Thanks again - makes perfect sense. Just bought one off of eBay for $29.

These are great descriptionshots of the S button's mechanical connections. I once took off my shifter surround and was happily surprised to find the cruise button's back light turned on. I've been looking at my S button's lack of back lighting at night (for the record not the red LED. talking about dimmable driving light) far too long now. I can use this description to get to the bulb. Thanks.

The S printing on my switch has essentially disappeared. Hasn't annoyed me enough to fix or replace.
