Default My First Trouble Code - P0456

Besides a couple random DSC failure messages that probably occurred due to a dirty wheel speed sensor (hasn't occurred in 6 months), this is my first, truly official DTC that came up yesterday. I see what it is described as, but I was wondering if this is something that I can repair myself, and if so...how to proceed? Thanks for the help in advance!

Found this old thread, and will see if the gas cap is the culprit before further investigation.

RacerX82

* A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
* A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
* A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
* Other small leak in EVAP system
* Faulty vent o-ring seal

Possible Solutions
The most common repair is to:

* Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
* Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
* Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses

Thought I read something recently about a recall notice for a new gas cap. There's also a bulletin you should search for, pertaining to the cannister vent valve.

What are all of the other non-OBD codes "unleash[ed]" by your AE system for diagnosis? Are these the false codes that have not been dealt with by software upgrades?

It's Service Action S509, issued June '05. New gas cap for 2001-2003 XK8/ XKR. I'd see the dealer and try that first.

Thanks bud, i'll talk to my service guy about it. If I recall correctly, FJT ran my VIN awhile back and this wasn't one of the listed recalls in his database. Good start.

The rest of the codes are odd, aren't they? The body module codes have always been there since I bought the scanner. All the seats and mirrors work correclty, fortunately. The ones below my P code have arrived after pulling the stereo from the car. I am sure the audio shop didn't re-connect the speed sensor wire to the nav module, and the missing power/remote is from the same thing I am sure. Hey, my horn works too!

Been driving it for a couple days now, after re-securing the gas cap, and no codes. Good to know this wasn't a huge issue. Still going to try and score the new gas cap though!

Do the gas cap first
if after that you still have an issue it may verry well be a canister close valve
if you end up doing the CCV make sure you replace the pipe as well
it runs between the 2 charcoal canisters
the pipe is usually the culprit due to moisture and then rust
that rust ends up getting into the CCV valve and keeps it from closing completely

I'm such a noob for never following up on this issue in the past. I've mentioned it other threads however.

ibjags, you were correct, the vent tube rusted, and fallen debris had fouled the valve apparatus in the CCV, so had to install a new one, along with a new vent. very good call.

Can you post a pic on where this tube is located. Not that I need anything else to do but if it can be cleaned and treated why not. 99 xk8

I don't know why but I did receive a new gas cap, under a recall.

Just saw your post. I had the recall on my gas cap and my canister was replaced when my car failed the emissions test. I have seen where the surface between the gas cap and the opening was cleaned and a film of grease was applied to get it to pass the inspection.

I recently had the same issue, although my code was PO455. Tried the Gas Cap first to no avail. The new Canister and upgraded Vent Tube Kit took care of the problem completely. All in all, it wasn't too bad.
Regards,
Brian

Not sure if it's in the JTIS, but if it is, I'll post up a pic.

Hi Brian!
Did you do this work yourself or have it done for you?
